A wee clutch of Crouchie high street news & gossip:

The rising tide of meringues will drown us all.
I dismay at these developments. The loss of a local book shop is bad news, though proably an inevitability given the high street and on line price competition. We have a glut of cafes in Crouch End, along with hair salons, nail bars and mobile phone shops - everything the modern yummy mummy could possibly need.
With the exception of Flashback Records on Crouch Hill, to my mind, the only shops left worth visting are now in Park Road. I do, however, confess a fondness for Waitrose. It's so refreshing to have helpful and willing staff, as opposed to the feckless and curmudgeonly examples found loitering in Budgens and Tescos.
I'm learning that you can spot a right winger on HoL by the care and attention they pay to their spelling and grammar. Interesting.
Possibly an interesting observation but a bit enigmatic for me. Perchance you mean Hugh's opening sally in this thread. Every word perfectly spelled, not a typo to be seen, and every apostrophe perfectly placed. Perhaps a slight quibble over the rather ungainly "Xmas". A couple of other well educated right wingers Steve Coppell and Gibson, Danielle also probably capable of correct spelling and grammar

It's a singular/plural thing.
So now you have added a riddle to the enigma. The missing layer is a mystery.
And still rents and rates in CE are too high, whilst the temptation to buy danish pastry, cream cake and Knee-a-lopitan multiplies, the opportunity to buy anything useful diminishes pro-rata. I wonder what odds I could get in a Green Lanes bookie on which shop will close next, and what will pop up to take its place.
I wonder if Prospero's called themselves Prospero's when they opened just so they could quote Prospero's Our revels now are ended etc when they finally came to close. I'm sure WS really wrote 'Clock-capped towers', not the silly 'cloud-capped towers'.
I've applied for planning permission to open my new Prosperous Bookshop, incorporating a truly revolutionary coffee republic, at 5 Wightman Road by the end of January. Any of you filthy wealthy business or city types, with a keen weather eye for a prosperous new year, wish to contact me about a minority shareholding ? Come now, let's put U into Prosperos.
Likewise. Never liked shopping there, which takes some doing for a bookshop given how much I like them.
Luckily we have the Big Green Bookshop this side of the tracks which is much more friendly, welcoming and community focused. Please support it!
