.....and whilst I'm in question mode, I had a bad experience with a cab firm recently and am trying to find the best local cab firm, for local, London and airport trips?
Two questions:
Which is the best local cab firm (or nearby if non of the locals stack up)?
What should I expect to pay, say to Crouch End/Muswell Hill, to the centre of town and to Heathrow? (Is it the same to Stanstead? I guess Gatwick is more expensive.)

I can't remember their name, but we always use 020 8365 7374. From memory it's about £35-40 to Stansted or Heathrow from just off Westbury Avenue, and it'll cost us about £7-8 to get back from Crouch End or Muswell Hill.
They've always been very reliable, and only once have we had to dispute the price (I always get a quote when I book the cab). Gatwick is £60-odd from memory for a normal car, but I may be making that up!

Golder Cars are OK, they turn up on time, and do not over charge. The drawbacks are that their drivers are sometimes incredibly smelly, and the cars are dirty. But you can get lucky and get both a clean car and a sane driver with good personal hygiene. They're the best of the local ones I have tried anyway.

I always use Golden Cars - never had any problems (not even smelly driver problems)! The drivers always seem friendly and the prices reasonable. Office is just next to the Beaconsfield pub on Green Lanes.
They were very sweet to me recently when I fell asleep on the night bus and woke up in a bit of Tottenham I don't know - they managed to find me and take me home in record time!

I always use Goldencars(Green Lanes) - 020 8800 3333. I have never had a dirty car or smelly driver - have had some very interesting conversations with drivers - found out about the Alevi sect last week - they are Muslims who don't go to the mosque and large percentage of Kurds are in the group, also many Iraqis (ie. non Sunnis, closer to Shi-ites... or did I get that the wrong way round....

I've been using Kypros Cabs by Hornsey Station (020 8341 9535) for longer than I care to remember. Ya don't get no Merc but they've usually been pretty reliable. A recent local trip - up to Wood Green was £6.

I have also used Kypros Cabs for years, but am looking to change.
The last few trips with them drivers have arrived late for the time asked for. (ok if they say they're coming from somewhere, but if they say they can do a particular time I do expect them to be there ish on time)
I think some of the drivers have left as they used to be quite friendly but are now generally fairly surly, and also have not had cars , and no prospect of cars a couple of times too.
I also think the last few times they really tried to sting us price wise which wasn't appreciated. Not feeling the love as a long term customer I have to say..
Anyway- will be programming in a new cab number to my phone.

Harringay Cars, across from the Salisbury on St Anns Rd are OK.
Taxi fares seem to have shot up over the last year or so. Was quoted £9 to Archway. Took the bus for a quid.

I can attest that 'harringay cars' cab company are one of the consistently worst taxi firms in north london.
i can reccomend the following cab company.
