Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Youngsters from the Save Haringey Youth Centres campaign will quiz Haringey Council chief executive Kevin Crompton on Thursday, November 18. Haringey last week confirmed budget decisions are yet to be taken that will decide the future of youth centres.

The council runs youth centres in Bruce Grove, Wood Green and Muswell Hill throughout the week, and activities are held on specific nights at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham and the Triangle Children’s Centre in South Tottenham.

Valerie Okoampah, 16, co-chairwoman of Haringey Youth Council, said: “I think there would be a very negative reaction if clubs close. It’s definitely something young people look forward to and a lot of young people would lose hope of achieving something or bettering themselves if the youth clubs close.”

More than 300 teenagers last week went public with fears that five council-run youth centres will face funding cuts as the full effect of the spending review is realised.

During the first week of campaigning they collected 650 signatures calling for youth centres to be saved - and they plan to collect 2,200 signatures by the end of next week so the petition can be put before the full council in November.

I can't find an online petition but, it would be great to have the opportunity to add a lot more signatures to this petition.

Watch a video of Anna Coote talk about the Big Society.
Someone told me recently that the council can't cut these services because they're a statutory requirement. True or false (or something in betw)?
