Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Latest soundings suggest that the the funding to electrify the Barking to Gospel Oak London Overground line may fall vitim to the current round of spending cuts.

The line, which includes Haringey Green Lanes was due to receive £25million funding from Department of Transport. But now user groups fear that the money will never be handed over.

The scheme is awaiting the outcome of a comprehensive spending review, due to be conducted in October.

Joanne McCartney, London Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey, said: "TfL needs to conduct a detailed engineering study of the project to determine what the total cost will be. Mayor Boris Johnson needs to get his skates on before the offer of £25million is withdraw by the Department for Transport."

If cancelled that would indeed be a bit of a shame, so keeping my fingers crossed.

Still, if any of the improvements to the line had to go, I can see why electrification's the obvious choice particularly given that TFL splashed out on a new fleet of shiny diesel trains that only arrived recently.

Personally think the key thing that needs preserving is the plan to introduce trains every 15 minutes from next year (see TFL page) which still seems to be going ahead - something that will make the line much more useful.
The £25m was only promised if TfL covered the rest, which they really can't afford any time soon. The offer was never going to happen, so it's no great loss if it it's withdrawn.

OTOH, the diesel trains are only rented and have been designed for easy deployment to another operator (note the conventional seating), so someone at TfL holds out hope of electrification happening sometime in the trains' ~40 year lifespans.
