Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Tree down in Finsbury Park Krankbrother event area
For years the Friends of Finsbury Park and Haringey Tree Protectors have been warning that allowing Krankbrother to use the wooded area in Finsbury Park (down the hill from the nursery) for an event venue for thousands of people will cause damage to the tree roots and possible loss of trees.
Well, in the last week a Horse Chestnut has fallen over in the event area, as can be seen in the attached photo.
Horse Chestnuts have a shallow root system and the compaction of the surrounding soil caused by thousands of event goers leads to damage to the roots and so weakens the tree.
How long before the Green controlled Haringey Council puts a stop to these events? It will be interesting to see how Councillor Bethany Anderson (ex co-chair of the Friends of FP) and Councillor Gio Iozzi (founder o Haringey Tree Protectors and Council Cabinet member) respond.

I saw coke being done in the toilets at the Glyndebourne Festival during the interval of Don Giovanni in 1995. I suppose that’s ok though because the blokes were wearing suits and had paid £200 for a Foyer Circle seat.

you are probably right... why don't you arrange one! There s a reason they don't as they are not economically viable.
Many years ago i started out at Kenwood House at the proms events over the lake there.... Prob the first time i saw cocaine actually. I'd never make the case that an audience for the London Philamonic would give us as much trouble as a Kasabian gig ... mainly because there would be a max of about 2k of them..... if you were really lucky!
Drumsheds only holds 15K max....and its inside!
Fields in the countryside......mmmm....again...sure the residents of the countryside would have something to say and how are we getting 45K people there and more importantly out of there in any reasonable amount of time?
The last time 'fields in the countryside' were used i seem to remember being chased around the M25 by the old bill after meeting up at South Mimms! Pulp wrote a song about it..... E'z and Wizz...
I go back to my point about a certain horrible low key stadium just off to the south there...every week you/we put up with worse behavior than at music gigs but its ok ..because its football.

And I’d go back to my previous point: there may well be bad behaviour at or around a football stadium (I used to live near Highbury, pre-Emirates, and well remember the Blackstock Road shops closing with rolled-down metal shutters on match days), but a stadium is purpose-built and designed to host thousands of people. Playing a football match once or twice a week doesn’t deprive others of access to a local amenity for days or weeks before or after.

In reality the concerts in Finsbury Park are not economically viable. They are only profitable to the perpetrators because the Council subsidise the environmental and social costs at the expense of local residents.

you cant draw an equivalence to Glastonbury and concerts at Finsbury. Completely different market. Well you can but you d be wrong.
and without the TV and international rights and paying the artists a lot less than they usually get Glastonbury wouldn't be viable either.

I'm not drawing an equivalence. You said large concerts can't be held in "Fields in the countryside..." I've simply provided one example of where they are to show that you are wrong.

Well l am sorry you want to remain anonymous but l would like to point out this is about Krankbrother which is totally different. An event which is placed on the footpath (which many of us use to get to Manor House instead of walking along Green Lanes). It is a totally unsuitable place to have an event under the trees where vehicles are placed over the roots of trees and cause compaction of the ground which eventually kills the trees. The rules that trees should be a certain distance apart from stage’s, vehicles etc is totally ignored
This is an area where many birds nest and bats also are often passing on the New River on which Krankbrother placed the fences. They’re also wildfowl that depend on that area including a much loved Swan family.
This area is also the most quiet area of the park (except for birdsong) and only one bench remains under the trees ( the rest, eleven benches have been taken away by the last council and stored nearby) many people like to sit under the trees in this heat but the elderly or those who can’t easily sit have nowhere! Also the whole area up to the sports centre has now been taken so the favourite area for many in the shade is out of bounds for nearly a month. Parks are for people and Finsbury Park takes the biggest burden in Haringey in the summer months. We have had events in the park for years and yes l have been to some but no longer. These events are too big and we aren’t paid enough or see where the money goes. No thought is given to the people who live nearby. Many go away but most of us don’t have that luxury. The whole events programme needs to be re looked at and changed accordingly!

the benches i can't comment on but it looks like they need refurbishment?
I love the swans too..... fiver says they are still there!

Of course they are still there in Woodberry where they nest as the cygnets grow they like to bring them to Finsbury Park where they used to sleep. They now go much further up the ladder to sleep. The ducks and all their cygnets died last year and we have much less wildfowl now in Finsbury Park. The whole park is not the same as it was and indeed the resident Swans in the lake had no cygnets for 2 years. This year they have cygnets but 3 of their eggs didn’t hatch, the lake is no longer a healthy place to be. It’s very sad. The grass is still rutted from tough mudder and the toilets are a disgrace. Also dead wildfowl have been found dead in the park. As l said l have no problem with music gigs just not so big and not so many. As for Krankbrother it should not be there. It’s the wrong space and we really need as many old trees as we can keep. For our health and future generations!
