Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

So a year after Boris pulled the carpet out from underneath our W1 bus ambitions we have a 20mph zone and traffic calming on Wightman Rd. Coincidence?

I don't think so (but i would say that, wouldn't I?). Residents on Wightman Rd had been asking the council for years for traffic calming and a 20mph zone. The council always came back with the reply that there was nothing that they could do because funding had to come from TfL as it was one of their roads.

I know our local politicians (and some not so local) had a lot to do with the work done on Wightman Rd but I would also like to raise my glass to the hard work of Old-Age-Emporium who collected more than 250 signatures in support of the W1 bus (before it was kyboshed by Boris) and I think those of us enjoying the slower traffic on Wightman Rd should too.

PS I'd be interested to hear back from any local politicians about whether or not the W1 bus effort made getting the traffic calming easier. Is it worth us undertaking these oblique projects to force government's hand?

I have to say thank you to everyone who made the traffic calming and 20 mph zone on Wightman Road happen!!! It was much needed and I feel it has made a difference to the road, both as a pedestrian and as a driver. Although there are some idiots who still insist on trying to race along there the speed humps force them to slow down. So thanks again!
Please note also the signing on the railway bridge between Wightman and Alroy. The bridge is now correctly signed as 7.5 tons maximum gross weight [with no exception for access]. There should be no overweight vehicles [I don't know what a small bus would weigh] travelling the length of the road. Why, we ask, has it taken our Council so many years to put up the correct signs. Also, for pedestrian users of Wightman, I have received a disappointing email from the Council to the effect that, although a letter was sent to residents in December last, informing them that pavements would be renewed [using the cheapest possible materials] between Atterbury and Mattison, this would not now go ahead because the money ran out. Without wishing to sound paranoid, this feels like the same old post election can't be bovered attitude - rather than punishment for voting in 2 Libdems, how dare they? - that we have come to expect from our Council. It would have been nice to have been informed of this change - maybe in Haringey People to save postage - rather than treated as if we don't care about a better Harringay. Just when it looked like there might have been an improvement in neighbourhood management, what a shame. Do I hear 'come back Brian, all is forgiven?' - No.
Personally I'm in two minds about it; can endless speedbumps throughout London really be the solution? Now I just feel sick each time I drive down Wightman road (slowly, as I always did), as the bumps are so aggressive.

On a more specific point relating to this work, at the top of Warham Road they have narrowed the exit into Whiteman so that it can only fit one car, but laughably there are still two arrows one pointing each way, suggesting a couple of cars might snuggle up next to each other, one turning left and one right, which is actually impossible unless they are both very narrow indeed and the cars hug the curb. Basically it's now one lane. Why on earth do that? There are often lots of cars coming up Warham which could previously split into people turning left and right. If, for example, there was a long queue of cars turning left and nothing going right, you could go in the right lane and turn right without waiting. Now everyone just has to queue in one line, creating worse which is bad for drivers and residents alike. This specific bit of the project (I'm sure there are other examples too) is totally pointless and a waste of money. Can anyone suggest any logic in this?
I agree that Wightman Road is definitely improved by the work that has taken place, and I would like to join in the thanks to those who helped to make it happen.
Thanks John for your mention of our uniquely oblique W1Bus project which may have fallen into some obloquy over the past year, but not among the 256 residents who said YES. My next door neighbour got tired waiting and died last week. Further along our terrace another old resident seems about to bow out. And I'm a bit breathless myself after yet another ascent of Mattison.

My R & D team, however, are working busily on their new W1 concept: the Smart ACV (Air Cushion Vehicle) on the Electric Hovercraft principle to silently float over all humps and raised tables with instant deflation at bus ports for ease of access/egress. Boris/Ken/Oooona or whoever will love our Wightman Streetcar of Desire.
Thank god Boris saw sense and canned the bus idea! There's no room for a bus on Wightman Road, anyone can see that.
Wot, no expletives, Anette?
She said " Boris " :-)
I thought she'd just deified Boris and was using His Sacred Name in grateful prayer.
I agree Anette. A bus on Wightman Road would be completely disastrous! Some of the noise on the road has been reduced with the traffic calming but a bus opening and shutting its doors noisily, ugh, I don't even want to think about it! I would definitely NOT support a candidate who wanted to introduce a bus route along Wightman!!!
Quelle delicatesse! Let's issue silk-lined ear muffs free of charge to those of more sensitive sensibilities.
Or perhaps a car share for those who feel they are unable to walk short distances!!!
