FINSBURY Park and Tough Mudder ~ did the council leader carelessly, recklessly or inadvertently, mislead a Member of Parliament as to how damage was caused to our park?
David Lammy MP wrote a justifiably angry letter to the current local leader about the council Events Team's Tough Mudder booking and in particular, the damage they did cause.
.
Here's the reply from Cllr Ahmet ~
N.B. the current council leader claimed,
We have been assured that deliberate muddying of the ground did not take place over the weekend
Most of the park damage from the Events Team booking was casual; but some of it appears to have been caused by their customer deliberately:
.
I took the photos above and below on the Saturday morning while the council's Events Team-booking was preparing for their Event, which was promoted as muddy. The clue was in the name. I photographed a Tough Mudder-branded vehicle driving in the northern part of our park, near the American Gardens with Ladder housing in the background.
Above: a cropped version of the first shot, showing tyre tracks along the middle of the running course. Cllr Ahmet agreed that the ground was wet and there was "extensive damage to the grass".
Rainfall alone does not normally cause such damage. Why was it necessary to drive a vehicle along the course on rain-soaked ground?
Deliberately?
Was Cllr Ahmet's letter accurate?

There are still areas of the park damanged three years later from this with large scars left in the grass. In one area which used to have grass and bulbs they put a giant water tank that slopped water everywhere and compressed the ground so much that grass has never grown back there.
The ecological damage of these events lasts years.
Yes that is correct. Many areas unsafe to walk on as the grass hides the holes, uneven ground etc. l found the dug up trail through a rose bed particularly upsetting!
Compacted ground leads to the eventual death of trees 🌳 and what has happened to all of the park benches, so many in pieces no seat etc we need many more!
Last Saturday saw the toilets yet again unusable, blocked and about to overflow. Just disgusting!
what has happened to all of the park benches
11 (eleven) park benches are held in the Nursery, between Manor House and Edible Landscapes—alongside the big white poly tunnel. They can be seen by peering over the fence.
The benches are unneeded by the council's hires, in fact they're in the way of Live Nation's Wireless gig. As the Events Team control the park, they were ordered removed, largely from the area that the council Licenses to Festival Republic.
They've not been put back. Park staff take orders from their line bosses (council Events Team) and elected Councillors seem powerless to get the benches put back.
