Was surprised, and more than a little pleased, to see this healthy looking fennel plant growing out of a crack in the pavement on Umfreville Road

A little further up a second plant was nestling by the wall

I think I saw the same plant last year! I was excited about foraging opportunities until it was pointed out to me that the fennel was at dog height…

Yes, agreed. Not advisable to eat any leaves from the street. Maybe you could harvest seeds from it to grow somewhere dog free?

Oh that’s a good idea! 

The dog wee might be less of a worry than the 1000 litres of glysophate-based pesticides this council uses on the streets and parks each year. Lambeth council, by comparison, uses just 0.05 litres annually. Those bumblebees need to head south for the summer.
