Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just read ZipCar and presumably ZipVan are closing their UK operations after Christmas

Any suggestions for alternatives?

The only alternative is to vote in someone who correctly sees the "congestion charge" as the tax that it is and who will do away with it. That won't be happening in a nation where 2/3rds take more from the state than they pay into it.

It looks pretty from the article you posted that Zipcar is making one last attempt to get a special exemption to the congestion tax and to be able to make a large number of people redundant.  The Guardian article is part of that PR blitz around that.

Let's stay on topic please Mark (car hire recommendations btw)

Thanks mate - nothing imminent but I'll bear it in mind.

🤦 Person Facepalming Emoji

Or, perhaps we could expand the area covered by the congestion charge: the roads out here in Haringey and beyond have too much traffic driving through too.

(Then, the Car Club cars would all be based inside the charge area and get the discount. Win/win!)

A ten-second check of the actual ONS website, rather than this conservative blog that peddles ideology to credulous people shows that this is patently untrue. And even better, this figure includes "benefits in kind" like the NHS and education. So if you are treated by a doctor, or you have a child in eduction, you are "taking" from the state. I assume you're happy to be corrected, Mark. https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/personalandhous...

The gentleman in question was (briefly) invited to put a sock in it, but it was a cruel gibe. Everyone knows that the Marxist-Islamists took all the socks.

Don't know any details but Enterprise Car Club have a couple of cars on the New River Estate - worth checking out.

They are mentioned in this article - which gives a considered and detailed explanation for ZipCars problems in London, esp compared to other European cities (rather than the fact free rant above).

Interesting - thanks Niall

This is really lousy news. Zipcar has been brilliant for us non-car owners. There’s no real competition (Enterprise Car Club has a tiny number of cars).

THE congestion charge has been blamed as (solely) responsible for ZipCar's demise.

However, according to yesterday's analysis from London Centric, the charge was one of several factors involved in the (regrettable) demise and it appears to have been the last straw ("final nail") for the company.

Car-owners leave their assets parked-up and stationary for some 90% of the time, during which period their costly asset depreciates heavily. And during the c.10% of time when its used. Economically, it's irrational. While a service like ZipCar makes economic sense.

Years ago, I subscribed for 12 months but never used it; I'm sure that many people would like to think of such as service as a convenient backup.  Perhaps a locally-owned alternative will grow in it's place.

Why Zipcar gave up on London
