It wasn't necessarily a vote for the Greens but a vote against Labour.

Mind you, if Labour don't grasp that and we get a few extra trees and some action to reduce pollution and address the Council's woeful recycling efforts, then I'm not going to complain.

A BIG aspect was the collapse in the Labour vote.

If the Ruling Group is concerned about the loss of St Ann's, then they have good reason for this and it goes well beyond (usual) Labour supporters sitting on their hands in St Ann's Ward.

It is the poor ratings of the Labour Government and especially the unpopularity of Kier Starmer. This rapid turnaround in fortune is remarkable because it follows, in fewer than 12 months, the Labour landslide in the last General Election.

Local New Labour is closely aligned with the national New Labour Government. Apart from the willingness of the New Labour government to protect Haringey from the risk of bankruptcy (with massive emergency financial support), this cosiness may not serve the local Party well.

Similar to my point above about people not voting for the Greens but against Labour, the nation didn't vote for Labour in the General Election, they voted against the Tories.

Starmer's  'tough on immigration' white paper today will just make his hole deeper. Those on the left of Labour are frothing at the mouth about it because it will lose them their biggest client vote. Whereas the rest of the country see him as simply trying to catch up with Reform with little to no interest in actually tackling the problem.

Next election will devastate them. They'll lose all their seats to the Greens, Lib Dems and the emerging Muslim party. Everyone else will vote Reform.

MR Starmer's "island of strangers" remarks ~

They may save some Labour votes from the Reform Party in parts of the country, which is the presumed object of his speech.

But they're unlikely to endear the PM to many voters in Haringey, including Labour supporters.
