Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello. A little while ago I asked for thoughts about moving to the area.

We've arrived.

Now that we're here, any essential local information? I'm loving the vibrancy of Green Lanes. Had a very decent kebab the other night...

The Salisbury looks good, but I've yet to drop in.

We're looking forward to meeting our new neighbours. It seems a real mix of families, some rather bohemian looking folk (I'm told many artists around) and others.

A mix of houses and some - seemingly - over crowded flats.

Nice to be here...

Hello, welcome! I am relatively new here myself, having moved from Hanwell a year ago. What kinds of things were you looking for? I particularly like Antepliler on Green Lanes for a casual meal, and often walk to the Old Dairy which is around Crouch Hill as they have lovely food and a great selection of ales. The food at the Salisbury is hit or miss but it's lovely inside and the staff are nice. The libraries here are great as well--helpful and the collection is decent.
Welcome Steve.

As Allyson says, et us know what's essential info for you and I hope you'll get some good contributions.

By the way, which road did you end up moving in to?
Welcome!

The Salisbury is definitely one to try, the food is really good and they have live music of many varieties on a weekly basis.

It sounds like you've already found a good kebab place - our fave is called Flame, which is just on the opposite side of Green Lanes to the Tesco near the Salisbury - you have to try the kebabs with yoghurt which are amazing.

Have you discovered Yasser Halim yet? It is a veritable Aladdin's cave of bread, cakes and pastries, both Turkish and non. It is pretty famous around these parts and has had various write up's in foodie publications. It also has a grocers next door to the bakery which does very veg amongst other things.

As you may have noticed, most of my recommendation revolve around food - which I think says something both about the area and me!
It was flame - that's the closest to me! Perfect. But what happened to the noodle place? Closed or refurb?
The noodle place is closed and for a good reason. It was dire.
No idea, didn't even notice it had closed! What road have you moved on to by the way?
Hi Steve
Like Katy M I'm good for food info (must be something in the name!) and also can't recommend Yassars highly enough ...I'm out of the area now, but when we had a place on Pemberton Road my hubby and I practically lived in there! Still drive back there regularly just to pick up goodies.

I also like Munas (Ethiopian/Sudanese restaurant) on Green Lanes, and Jai Shri Krishna on Turnpike Lane has fab vegetarian indian food, and is run by a lovely family. Also on Turnpike Lane 'Salims' cafe does really good pakistani food, and the Lebanese supermarket is great. The tapas at La Vina (Wightman Road, just by the bridge) is also good.

...then to burn all that off you've got the running track at Finsbury Park just up the road, or if you're feeling not quite so energetic the 'circular walking route' (start point near the cafe!). Also has basketball/tennis courts, and British Military Fitness have their classes there on tues, thurs and saturdays. You can also row yourself round the boating lake in the summer!

If you have kids Finsbury Park's play areas are great - some really nifty climbing frames, and my kids particularly like the 'Richard Hope Play Space' with it's enormous piles of rocks that they spend hours clambering over. Also a dog-free picnic area in there, or if you have a pooch there's a 'dog-friendly' seating area by the cafe.
thanks Katey. No dogs..yet
What do I want to know about? So much, and probably much will come from experiencing it.

My neighbours, who we're likely to bump into. The people coming and going look eclectic... Will they be friends or foe? Everyone seems to be turning a keen eye on the house, having been unoccupied for so long, asking about the family, who I'm moving in with...

In N1 I had the de Beauvoir deli, a Tesco Metro and Bavo. On Green Lanes it is vibrant.

Should I bring my neighbours a welcome basket, or will that seem rather strange? Should I keep to myself? This online community doesn't suggest so...

Maybe they'll bring me a welcome basket!

The history, the house, all to be discovered.

I'm rattling around an empty house until the furniture catches up, and it seems so unreal having come from the last place. So much space, much nicer houses (in my opinion) than in Stokey, where we were looking. Better value here.

But I fear that means a change coming, as always. The gentrification pushes ever upward, and I suspect that in a few years to come the things that make our area distinctive will price out. But, don't blame me, blame the seller. Those prices have now taken a hike.

Good or bad? I dunno...

But, in the meantime, I'm going to enjoy my space and grow, slowly, into our house.
There is a monthly drinks for 'dads and friends of dads' at The Salisbury on the 2nd Friday of every month (next one is 14th May) Several contributors to this website (John McM, Birdy, Matt B) are regulars.

Also we have a Ladder cricket team - we play about 10 times a year on Sundays and mid week evenings. Let me know
I'm not a dad - we don't have kids. But we do have 2 spoiled nephews, with another unknown bump on the way.

And strangely, my brother was the one who played cricket for the county. And rugby for the RAF. And hockey for the school... They're coming down to visit in a few weeks.
You would be very welcome to join us for drinks all the same - the last thing we talk about is kids!
