This local historian runs a popular youtube channel debunking falsehooks about history often perpetuated as true. He occasionally also debunks some of the weirder elements of popular culture so its natural I suppose to cover the council's decision to rename Blackboy Lane as well...

Dan, this issue has been "on the internet" since at least 2020.
Keen to get a well-informed outline of this issue, before it all blew up, I asked Bruce Castle Museum curator Deborah Hedgecock to provide me with a history. It remains the most authoritative version, mentioning possibilities rather than claiming definitive knowledge that none if us has. You can read in on HoL here.
Thanks. I suppose I should have said it has been picked up by an international platform rather than a hyper local one. Regardless, the nonsense is getting noticed elsewhere.
Has it been 'picked up' by an international platform? Do you that mean a clearly right-wing individual has uploaded a fairly opinionated video to YouTube, or am I missing the point? We can be thankful that the link he mentioned in the video with more information on the Blackboy Lane situation first references the HoL piece then uses it as its authority. So, cast of a certain set of opinions, as he may be, he is clearly not completely without wisdom!
I watched the youtube thing Hugh, and frankly I don’t think it added anything to the the debate, apart from a spurious ukippy thing about London being colonised. Not helpful in my opinion.
But I’m no expert.
Well he does have 130,000 subscribers spread around the world!
I've seen a few of his videos. I find then fair, well reasoned and factually accurate although I don't always agree with his conclusions. I wouldn't say he's right wing. He's equally scathing of both sides of politics when warranted. However, I think some people characterise him that way, believing it to be a pejorative term, because they simply don't like what he says but aren't able to refute the logic.
But yes, its good to see HoL quoted as a source of further information..
To be fair, after the first 30 seconds, I skipped though the piece rather and picked up a few remarks dismissing one thing or another because it was left wing. That rather sapped any enthusiasm I might have had for watching the piece through. But I’m glad to hear that his style is dismissive of all shades of political opinion, I think!
Dan , I’m petty sure Kim Kardashian has more than that and I wouldn’t use any opinion she has as an argument.
Im not dissing his point about rinsing/washing our history. It’s there to make us proud and to shame us in equal measure. But to suggest that a city I’m proud to have been born in, that has sucked up the economic immigrants of Mercia, Anglia, Wessex, Wales, Northumbria Scotland and Ireland has been colonised by others is a bit rich.
Oh, and I’m not suggesting that what you mean, just the bloke on YouTube
I forgot Southern Wales, that’s Devon and Kernow in my head, and not forgetting the good burgers of Kent.
I think that got you all.
My point was simply that others far and wide have noticed that Haringey council has decided to erase our history and rename a street name which has local historical relevance despite the views of residents who over whelmingly opposed the idea. And they are appalled as well.
Don't worry. I don't subscribe to the idea that the indigenous population is being replaced. It makes sense that Mohammed/Muhommed/Magomed (peace be upon him) and all the other variations is the most popular boys name in England. It just means that Muslim peoples tend to use chose that name whereas other groups pick from a wider list.
Other than the cost and the affront to democracy, the thing that has so annoyed people who live on and near to Black Boy Lane is the fact that noone can say why they think the name is racist.
Even Eldridge Culverwell, a prominent black councillor who grew up in South Africa and presumably experienced real racism under apartheid says its not racist.
What problem will it solve?
Will working class people in Haringey be any better off (black, white or brown)? Or will they just have fewer/reduced council services as a result of the cost?
I know the people who actually live on Black Boy Lane (80% or so of whom voted against the name change) will be dealing with the mess for years to come as they have to change the address of all their official documents, bills, visas, holiday bookings etc. I'll bet the Council's own systems won't be able to deal with the name change. You saw that here first...
Send a message in May. Vote anyone except Labour (and that includes the Momentum fifth columnists pretending to be Labour - especially those in St Anns ward).
