Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

See them at:

Harringay Ward Candidates
St Ann's Ward Candidates
Seven Sisters Ward Candidates

I'm told that pics and bios are on their way.

So that's full house except for LDs in Seven Sisters + any smaller parties or indepdendents. I know we have at least one independent in Harringay ward. Any others anyone knows of?

It seems like you have to give "The Greens" a big vote first and then at the next election they might show some interest in your area. Unusual strategy
Not unusual at all. If you have unlimited resources it may seem a bit ridiculous but they obviously don't.
Many thanks for taking the time to come on to the site and explain your strategy. It sounds like it's a well thought through one born out of experience.
Eddie, been announced on another HOL thread, name included or linked to (an HOL member).
Intriguing - I like an Easter Egg mystery chase. No quasi-son-in-law capers involved, I trust?
Still intrigued, Matt. Not one of the HIP Three you floated eighteen months ago?
Nope. see here. You must have been out shopping Eddie when Hugh put up the 'discussion'. :)
Thanks Matt. Got him - we await the declaration, then.
Just a few words about how the voting system works. Local council elections are 'first past the post', that is the three with most votes are the ones who get in (just in case people don't know that, since one contributor was asking). Let's suppose you vote for one Green and use your other 2 votes for non-Green candidates X and Y. You're then contributing to the totals for X and Y and your votes for them may 'cancel out' your vote for the Green. So if you want to see a Green on the Council, it's best to use all your votes for Green and then you won't be voting against your own choice.

I wonder if the other parties' candidates have gone away for Easter ? they don't seem to be joining in this so far.
Unless a group of you can agree on which green candidate to vote for if you're only going to vote for one, in advance. Maybe using some kind of new fangled social media thingy.
Hi folks,

I am back and I was away - I thought it better to say so than just go silent, but perhaps this backfired. I see that Pete and Anne have added some comments and I don't want to repeat them, however I think it worthwhile emphasising a few points. First, to reiterate we have put up 3 candidates in Harringay and I still believe that this was the correct thing to do, in fact we have a full slate across the borough. I believe that this demonstrates the commitment we, Greens, have to the borough and also to offer voters the widest possible choice in the elections. Second, in these elections we can make history by getting Greens elected onto Haringey Council. It doesn't matter in which ward, more that there are Greens on the Council to bring a fresh, independent and dynamic voice which can benefit the whole borough. Therefore, not having the resources of other Parties we have focussed in one target area to give ourselves the best possible chance of making sure that there is Green representation on the council. Even by having just one Green councillor elected we could make an enormous difference and I believe that it would help us increase our strength across the borough by giving us all an independent voice to call upon to represent our views. Third, I am from this area - my nan grew up on Lausanne Road - and so I wanted to stand because I know that if elected I can represent this Ward and this Borough well - I don't have a 'passing' interest. Just for your information some of the priorities the Greens are putting forward across the borough include putting a speed limit of 20mph on residential streets and introducing traffic calming and more space for pedestrians (has been done in Islington Council), reducing CO2 emissions by 40% by introducing a free mass insulation scheme (in Yorkshire Kirklees Council have done so successfully) and fighting against the closure of Whittington A&E and Maternity Services. I don't want to go on here but will if there is more interest - just to say it would be good to hear what you feel the local priorities are - these are few of those we have identified but we are always interested in hearing about others.

Finally, I'm not sure having 'stood as a Green candidate in local elections' will help my CV - I haven't even thought of putting it on, as things are OK without it.

Apologies for the length of the post but thank you for your patience in waiting for my response. Again, I do not come on line for personal use every day so there may be a delay if you would like questions answering or you feel I haven't understood a question or comment properly. Please don't take this as a sign of lack of commitment to the elections rather as honesty about time pressures we all face one way or another.

Thanks
Kerry
And yet, Kerry, having read you, Pete, Anne and the local and national websites - I'm still puzzled as to why the local party failed to build upon the thousand or so votes Harringay Ward conferred on your three candidates in 2006, or why we didn't hear as much as a cheep from any Green Party members between May'06 and April'10. This was a time when Ladder residents were getting usefully worked up over several of those issues you describe as your priorities: 20mph Zone extension; traffic calming for all Ladder roads; pedestrian space; improving pavements; enhancing open spaces; reducing emissions; battling for St Anns Hospital and now Whittington; and it would have been nice to have had some Green support for our Wightman Bus campaign.

It just isn't enough merely to list these priorities from the Green Bible. And I'm not that sure that you should call a Green Party councillor an 'independent voice'.

Will we still be asking in May 2014: 'Why didn't you build upon the 1,000+ votes Harringay gave your three candidates in May 2010 ?' ? Or will those local election candidates have by then developed parliamentary ambitions?
