Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Our ageing laptop's charger has broken. Wonder if anyone has one lying around from an old Macbook Pro that they no longer use?

The specifications are: 45W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter

They date from about 2012-2014 I think.

If you can help, it would be much appreciated as new ones are ridiculously expensive. i'd be happy to make a donation.

It is outrageous how much they charge for a new one. I was going to buy a spare one recently as I had forgotten mine. But they said it would cost £95 so I didn't bother! Total rip-off!

I got one at Fasttech on Green Lanes a couple of years ago for around £50 - not an original but it works fine. I'm on my third charger for a 2011 laptop.

Hmmm it does appear the laptops last a lot longer than the chargers, so I might be out of luck. John Lewis sells it for £70

Gumtree has second-hand and there are also non-proprietary options.

I wouldn't go for 2nd-hand as the chargers tend to pack up after a while anyway.

Then that’s probably good advice!

The nonproprietary options come with a chance of melting one's laptop, if online reviews are believed

This article agrees with that view. Makes me glad I’ve never been tempted to go down that route.

A point about the £95 for a new power supply. The power supplies are just not made to last as long as the laptops. Apple have to force people to upgrade by stopping supporting certain hardware (I think it's after 8 years). Businesses buy cheap Windows laptops for their staff, depreciate them fully by three years and then throw them away and get another one by five. Much better off buying Macs, even if you do have to buy a new power supply every 8 years.

That is true. The laptop itself is still incredibly useful, does almost everything one needs. I agree if companies must enforce redundancy, I'd rather throw away a broken charger than a whole machine
