Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hundreds of pubs doomed to closure could be rescued under Government proposals to help to fund “community buyouts”, promote local beers and cut planning red tape.

Ministers will announce today that they will match money raised by residents to buy the freeholds of ailing pubs and provide business support to help to set up post offices, shops and restaurants in the same premises. The move follows growing concern that almost 40 pubs are closing every week.

Oh good. So my taxes are going to go to rescue businesses that are failing because of the Government's intransigence over smoking. And to set up Post Offices to replace those that have been closed by that same Government.

If the breweries can't keep pubs afloat how will " communities" manage it ?
Unfortunately, the breweries "tied" system is part of problem causing pubs to close.
Sorry, but I dislike the use of the phrase: so my taxes are going to pay for.....

I doubt if your contribution will find it's way there at all... it probably doesn't even cover the cost of repairing the potholes on Green Lanes ..

I expect you still get a good deal for the taxes that you pay...
I do. But I would rather see my taxes go towards Education and The NHS, for example, than to reversing the effects of ill-thought out legislation.
Unfortunately many of our industries are subsidised by the government especially the farming industry*.
''The proposals are to be announced today by John Healey, the Housing Minister''.
I thought John Healey was 'pubs minister'.
The comments/replies in The Times are astonishing - 'Marxists' 'Cynical electioneering by the Marxists Kings of Kensington' 'More communist measures.' ' Zanulabour'. Wow. I thought the Times was for people who had some level of political nouse....
You DO know who owns it ? :)
yes, the real Prime Minister of the UK

nay, should I say the real Queen oops! King of England..

He's the one who decides what's what..

armes England! - poor old england..

ruled by an Australian from the USA... who then blames it all on Brussels and Berlin!
Yes I know who owns The Times and that since he bought it, it has become tricky to dstinguish news from comment. But I was surprised at the political illiteracy (is that the word?) of the comments, at about Sun reader level, where the standard insult is 'communist'. Still.

Or perhaps they blog from the USA.
The Dirty Digger owns " The Sun "as well so perhaps it's not surprising that the readership of both show common characteristics :-)

Mind you, "at Sun reader level" is, in itself, a useful insult.
Alcohol is linked to more anti social behaviour than gambling.

Alcohol addiction causes more harm than gambling addiction.

We have had a campaign to stop more betting shops opening in our area.

Should we also be concerned about the number of pubs?
