Hi

I am a professional in the field. If they are in school, a personal tutor or careers lead can help identify someone to help/in a college, the careers department will be able to help.

If you have trodden that path, I would recommend that you get them to put together a draft and after, you sit down with the young person to talk through and write any activities they have carried out outside school (sports, helping parents in their jobs, virtual workshops, organising impromptu events, helping out in their street or neighbours, etc). These can be a valuable source of experience. After that exercise, you can work together on they can present them on a CV in more suscint way (check the examples below) but in their own words.

If the young person has not had any of those experiences, it is not a problem. I would suggest you get them to talk through activities they have done in school, eg. group work, sports, citizenship tasks, etc and their role on them and the skills they developed during them and follow steps to write them out suscinctly under experience/extracurricular experience. Please note if they have had caring responsibilities, etc, it would be a good idea to reflect them (sensitively) on the CV.

Employers would appreciate that so much more than a perfect CV. It will also help the young person a) to gain more awareness/confidence of what they are able to do and b) to be able to talk about them (clearly) during an interview.

Hi and thank you for your prompt response.

This has all been done but my son just can't seem to get anywhere... he doesn't like my suggestions but I (nd others) feel his cv is poor.

I am looking for someone do do a professional hob on what he has put together... a pro re-write.

Is this something you can do?

However and before you engage any professional, I would strongly recommend that you check the following:

a) has he had feedback about his CV from a careers adviser in school/college? Is he having ongoing advice on job search and applications? Could he not try them?

b) the problem may not be in the CV in itself, but due a number of factors like a) a CV not tailored to the job applied for, b) poor application/not meeting requirements, c) poor interview skills and fundamentally, it is a difficult time to find a job for young people, specially in certain sectors. Success may come after many considered and tailored applications. Advice in these areas can make more of a huge difference but it may take a few sessions.
