Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This from Stroud Green Lib Dem councillor, Richard Green's blog:

At the end of December I was alerted to the fact that there had just been a public exhibition about a huge proposed new development on the Stroud Green Road. As the image on the left shows the John Jones arts centre plan to put a large 6 storey development on their site. They are at an informal consultation stage – the formal planning application has not yet been submitted.

The development is on the Islington side of the road, and Haringey don’t seem to have made much effort to get involved in the process. Councillors such as myself weren’t alerted to the event - which meant I couldn’t advertise it on this website. So I immediately put an email into Haringey Council asking how they were going to ensure that residents on the north side of Stroud Green Road were able to have a say. This week (5 weeks later) I got a response just directing me to Islington Council’s website and saying no Haringey panning officers had even attended the December consultation event.

Clearly this development would have a major impact on Stroud Green. Its great to see people wanting to invest in Stroud Green Road, but this proposed building does seem quite tall, given the height of the Victorian terraces surrounding it. I think everyone should have their say on this development – regardless of which side of the borough boundary they live, and I will press for wide-scale consultation when the planning application is submitted.

Yeah quite tall and overly catering for car users given the fantastic transport links next door.

We need more houses... or less people.
... and perhaps fewer cars. With new developments, instead of making the provision of car-parking compulsory, why not make it illegal?
There's been very little on that site - especially the part facing Stroud Green Road - for many years so some development would be good. But a six storey building is completely out of character with the rest of the area and would change it considerably. Not sure if there's any opportunity to get it scaled down but I would like to try.

I see no cars, at least in that picture.

AFAIK LB Islington is very down on cars in any development. When the college in Holloway was tarted up, one of the conditions to the planning going through was that they dug up the car park.

Six stories is too much, I agree.

And I lament the passing of JJones the art shop. Nowhere like it this side of - where? - now.
On the left hand side is a car entrance. We seem to think we have the right to park our cars out the front of our houses, why should the people who buy there not think the same?
There will need to be access for all sorts of vehicles. Maybe in the hidden centre square, there will be a great big allotment and playground and crazy golf. Anyone got a link to the plans?

This is right next to the tube, train and bus station. Can't see LBI allowing parking places, except disabled and delivery ones.

The (doomed, hopefully) Grainger development at Wards Corner in Seven Sisters has no parking places except as above. LB Haringey has a similar policy.

Every transport hub big and small is now up for grabs for development like this. Car ownership will become so 20th century.
