Does anybody know what is happening at the Picture House in Crouch End? Looks like there is building work going on inside. Has it closed down for good and being reconverted into something else?

It's part of the Cineworld chain, which closed all their cinemas for the foreseeable. The Arthouse next door is still open, and pays Living Wage to their staff, unlike Picturehouse.
Love the ArtHouse, and was puzzled/dismayed to see Picturehouse opening next door.
Used to like the Arthouse. They played deafening loud audio during the ads and trailers. Staff said they had no authority to reduce the volume. Email not replied to. Customer lost.
It's like that in all cinemas - I'm told it's because they 'compress' the sound much more in the ads and trailers so that it sounds louder. (It's also the case on TV, but there we usually have a mute button.) They probably can't change it because it's this kind of advertising that keeps the cinemas afloat, rather than our ticket money.
i suffer from tinnitus, and can't sit through the ads in most cinemas. I have complained to the Odeon, and was told that ads are centrally controlled, but that if you mention it in advance, they can lower the volume. i even got a refund from the Odeon
Volume levels in independent cinemas, eg the Rio, and Curzon cinemas, are noticeably lower.
I'd say it is ALWAYS worth asking for the volume of the ads to be reduced - the more we do it, the more likely it is to happen.
I think noise levels in UK cinema ads are possibly dangerous to hearing. In Germany they have stricter noise controls in music venues, and cinemas are MUCH quieter and more civilised.
Final tip from me: i stand outside during the ads if they're too loud, plus always carry some Alpine Musicians' earplugs (they cost around £16)
I noticed a new Picturehouse is being built in Finsbury Park right next to the station. Hopefully by the time it's completed we will all be able to go go back. I love going to the cinema so really hope the pandemic doesn't kill them off
Half-listening to the radio today, I heard someone from Cineworld mention that they were opening a new cinema in Finsbury Park soon. It struck me that this might not bode well for the future of the Picture House in Crouch End.
Perhaps the Arthouse could take over the Picture House (much more comfortable seating) and restore the redbrick hall to its former glory as Crouch End’s only lap-dancing club. How the veterans of the Sally Army must be turning in their graves!
