Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Is anyone having to reboot their router/modem regularly with Virgin Broadband? We're having to do it at least once a day. I think it may be a problem with their servers locally so if I notice a disconnect I will post the time on here, I would appreciate if others could do the same.

No, but am trying to use VPN and due to having a dynamic IP address the vpn connection keeps throwing me out (see John and BBU's comments at the top of this page). The solution according to Virgin is to upgrade to a business acount for the sum of £80 installation and £45 per month - grrr
Your DHCP IP address lease is for at least a day, I think mine say they are for a week. You have another problem. Do you have a firewall? Some kind of "keep-alive" signal is not getting through to the vpn-server and it is disconnecting you.
Ah, OK, so they are bullsh*****g me - surprise surprise. I have a standard windows firewall, maybe I'll turn it off as an experiment and see if I have any problems then.
Can't say about Virgin as I prefer service diversity (not everything down one line), and prefer the Sky EPG many fold... Sky+ = great, even in bad weather... My Sky broadband has been up for 632+ hours, and the last drop was simply due to a change in IP... So, at a mere 5mbps, the turtle wins ;-)

DynDNS regularly try to suspend my free account, as the Sky IP doesn't change often enough (less than once per month), so they think that the account has become inactive (a simple link can be clicked in that warning email, or a router reboot, to avoid account suspension from DynDNS)!

Can't recommend Sky highly enough - it's almost a corporate class DSL service, which is provided by the SNS overlay network - uber Easynet in other words.

I've been connected to an SSL VPN all day and overnight on many occasions. My cisco soft phone extension from my office is glitchless and works perfectly, remote desktop is grand, and downloads aren't THAT sluggish... I even get 600kbps up, woosh ;-)

I was on Demon, same phone line, they sucked bad eggs and charged high prices too. Sky are much less contended, and have a far better network than many other providers. The migration was pretty seemless - 15 mins of down time at 11pm one evening a few years ago. Would I go back? No!

Obviously there are pros and cons to all providers, but Sky do seem to provide a DSL service that is as reliable as Easynet (who they purchased several years ago, for the strength and reach of their network, before investing several hundred million more), and with a bit of sweet talking, you can negotiate costs down to about £40 for TV (all but movies and sports), Sky+ services, phone line rental and uncapped DSL. Also, there's no traffic shaping / timed bandwidth caps (such as Tiscali, BT, and possibly many others), which is great for those who download-a-plenty (not that I do).

So, to all you virgin media sufferers, I'd call up Sky, get a quote, and negotiate with Virgin until they can match price and service levels. If they don't, you can always order sky and cut off Virgin when it's been installed (you will however need a BT line first, but hey...). Of course, if you do get a reliable service from Virgin, and you get the speed, then it may be better to stick, not twist... But I would not stick with a long running unreliable service unless you really have to...
I've found Virgin broadband very reliable and they're rated top for providing the advertised speed. No one else gets close. I wouldn't like to go back to ADSL.

Yes regularly, often at night it slows down almost completely.

I run a 5 year old Mac Powerbook G4. My wife runs a fancy new Sony Aorta (or whatever its called). My Mac used to drop out of its Airport express all the time (I even bought a second one to boost the signal but it was rubbish).

In the end I went to Fastnet on corner of Mattison Rd and they sold me a wifi router for £30. It has been brilliant. The Mac and the Sony lose the signal once a week now but a quick reboot of the Router sorts that out. But I think that is because they sorted the cable/trunking outside rather than the new router.

Also run a diagnostic speed test and note what speeds you are getting. If it is lower than you are promised ask Virgin for a discount or down size your package.

Check out Moneyexpert.co.uk for a better Internet Service Provider (ISP) and threaten to leave. Any time we have complained to Virgin they have given us a discount so that is worthwhile.

It seems very inconsistent - sometimes it works sometimes it needs a reboot. It never seems to lose connection while we are actually online so is difficult to tell the time it happens... But its usually at least every other day we need to reboot the router to get a signal!
Sounds like the router Virgin is giving out might be the problem (?). We have one from Telewest days.
I have an expensive, amazing, dedicated "internet appliance" that I get all sorts of diagnostics out of. I appear to be having the exact same problem as people in Cardiff/Swansea were having late last year and it needs to be fixed by Virgin. I need to show Virgin that it's not just me being affected though as they will just blame my equipment.
