Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
HOL and diversity.
I know that in theory HoL is 'open to all' but I wonder whether a survey of our. members has been done? This area is after all v ethnically mixed and I don't see that reflected much here. If not what can we do to bring in local groups or individuals so they are also part of our online community?

I felt the same way when I lived in Camden 13 years ago and the local snobs were trying to get the giant boots taken off of the front of the shops.
Young people usually have relationships to gain or foster and so tend to spend less time being interested in the administration of the area they live in.

N - You're right - my topic is an area of discussion that needs airing. But lets not get deflected - I was talking about ethnic diversity and not youth - who also may be under represented but thats another discussion. I'd like to bring the us back to the point. I am asking for suggestions about what can be done not why nothing can be done - got any suggestions that you (and the rest of us) personally could do to further cultural and ethnic diversity on HoL?

Right okay, we did a HOL poster a while back aimed at other communities in Harringay and we couldn't find reliable translators for the text, other than using various unpredictable online translation services - which were pap.
We need translators for the five most popular languages after English in this area
Turkish (I have)
Arabic
French
Polish
Chinese
We need "Get Connected in Your Community" translated
Do we have any volunteers? Some may need supplying as Word files as many languages can be difficult to view - font issues.

I could do the French translation if necessary. Could the idea be better "get connected to your community ?
Something like " Participez a votre commune virtuelle " ?

Great but need Kurdish/Turkish/Polish/Greek/ Parsi speakers first. French speakers usually know English

John I need the accents as well : ) I shall send you a PM and you can email a word document. It has to be "Get Connected in Your Community" as that is what has been printed on all the cards and previous posters
SB, there are many Poles/Kurdish/Turkish/Chinese who speak English, that is not the point. The exercise is to try and make them feel welcome. If you can supply and more that you think need to be included fantastic, I'm sure I can fit them on.
Those five languages were given to us by someone who knows the demographics of this area.
I have or will get:
French
Chinese
Turkish
Polish
but I don't have the Arabic
If we get this sorted swiftly I can knock some out at work.

Caveat, The French translation was done by a Polish friend and is literal. -

I could take the poster to the Cypriot community centre which is next to my road -I'm sure they'd be willing to translate. Also as I said previoulsy the guy at Cafe Limon is a journalist - I'm sure he would help???
