Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
New River path query
Despite various online maps I'm having trouble figuring out where to pick up the path (going south towards Finsbury Park etc) when you emerge onto Wightman Road from the bit which goes from near Hornsey station. Could someone tell me, please? One source seemed to imply you can't pick it up again till you're in Finsbury Park. Is this the case and if so, where in Finsbury Park?

I think that source is right. Some may come and correct me, but I´d say that you can pick it up again through a gate in Endymion road (although the gate is now closed due to COVID, so you could get into Finsbury park through a different entry or just pick the path up again at Green Lanes.
I´ve attached a screenshot, hope it makes sense.

Thanks, Jose... I think it makes sense. Maps not my strong point. I wonder why that gate is closed if others are open. And then you can get onto the path again at Green Lanes? That's a bit I've not done or only done some years ago in the winter when the light was poor.

You are welcome Roslyn. The gate is actually closed for safety reasons. The path to get into Finsbury Park is narrow and it's been shut since the beginning of the lockdown. You can either go through a new entrance they've opened a little bit down the road or go up to the Endymion Road's big gate a bit further up.
And yes you are right. From Green Lanes you can then pick the path again, and it takes you to Seven Sisters Road, where you will have to cross and pick the path up again. Soon you will find yourself in the reservoir!

Ah yes, the big gate might be good. I can't remember seeing it but the river itself actually goes through this bit of the park? I suppose I had better do a recce before I take others there!

It does go through the park. Not sure 100% you can walk along the whole way tho.

Yes you can walk along the river through the park, sort of. But, very strangely, only on the 'wrong' side of the fence. It's never made much sense to me why they allow you to walk along the river in most every place EXCEPT in the park. But you can do so in Enfield town park - very strange.
The reason you can't follow the path through the Ladder is down to resident pressure. Years ago, they tried to open the path up, but those who lived next to the river objected. So, it was closed again, or was never opened: I'm not sure which.

When you say the 'wrong' side of the fence, do you mean you have to walk in the street, up Green lanes? And where after that do you get back onto it again?

I think Hugh means that though you can walk along the river in the park there is a railing between you and it, unlike the case when you are on the stretch leading up to Hornsey. If you follow it through the park it then goes under Green Lanes and you can carry on walking alongside it (no railings now!?) until Seven Sisters Rd.

I think technically the bit of the walk between Wightman and Endymion goes along the Harringay Passage. I have a pdf of the route somewhere which I’ll try to dig out.

As has been mentioned, the path from where it emerges at Seymour Rd, through the back of Woolaston Rd is closed to public access, and returns at Endymion Rd (by the currently closed gate) where it can be seen as it continues to Green Lanes at which point you can continue to walk on the towpath to the reservoirs. It's a pleasant and interesting walk (or run) along the backs of the local housing estates and the industrial/warehouse area with quite striking reeds and bird life, but be careful and vigilant because it's quite secluded.
