Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I don't have a decent enough camera to capture it properly, but there's a little egret on the New River today! Stunning, elegant thing. Not sure I've ever seen one before - I know they only returned to the UK in 1996.

Anyone else ever spotted one here?

Yes! My wife and I saw it flying above the New River near Hornsey High Street on Monday afternoon. A lovely surprise.

I'm told an egret has been sighted on the Ally Pally reservoir so maybe the same one.... not sure if they always operate singly or in pairs.

I've since seen three together in the same spot on the New River as my original sighting. Locals tell me that two are fledglings.

Where on the New River did you see them? I've been on several parts of this path now and not seen anything like this.

The stretch between the Turnpike Lane railway bridge and Hampden Road. Part of the bank is naturalised there, and the water particularity shallow, and it seems to attract a lot of birds.

I’ve seen one a few times now, once in a tree (where it did look a bit out of place, with its long wader legs).

I used to see a little egret down the wightman/hornsey stretch of new river, usually on early walks with the dog, going back about 5 yrs - so pleased it's still around! (Or its descendents!)

A kingfisher was also a rare good spot on occasion...
