Frogspawn
I have a tiny pond in my v small garden and now a 16-month grandson who likes to look in it and poke about a bit. I worry about the cat but I'll give it a go. The pond is one of those wooden barrels cut in half and has aerating plants etc.. About a cupful would be good. Also, anyone got a water lily root that could be shared - dwarf one would be best...

Personally, I would be hesitant about getting frogspawn for a small pond such as yours. There are a few issues ... the frogs will need to be able to get in and out of the pond easily. In the spring and summer they will want to spend most of their time in or near the water but after that they will want to come onto land and find a secluded space to hide away and hibernate. They also need to come out of the water to hunt for slugs and bugs. If your pond is sunk into the ground and the water level is close to the rim it might work, but if not they would have a problem.
Another issue is cats .... frogs are very easy to catch and very soft. As a child I had cats and a pond with frogs, and horrible memories of the cats bringing bleeding half dead frogs into the house!
Personally I would go for goldfish ... they are very visible and hardy. My kids love looking for them in our pond.
Lastly do make sure to get a miniature lily. I made the mistake of getting one that was tagged as "for small ponds" but within 2 years it had taken up all the space in a 2x1m pond.

Thanks Laurence you reminded me of what my Siamese did to a frog when my kids were growing up ...my large tabby would do the same I guess.
I bought a pygmy water Lily a few years ago out at Chase Farm.... it cost about 15vquid. It looked a bit dead when I got it but they assured me it'd perk up...it never did. I should've taken it back ... but I kept thinking it 3as gonna perk up. The man in the garden centre was insistent. In the end a year came n went... too late by then. Maybe you're right about the gold fish....

I did have goldfish but a heron took them all.
