This was uploaded to YouTube today... a montage of bus videos from the area around Ducketts Common and then Crouch End, before filming at Hornsey (pre New River Village), a couple on Turnpike Lane itself, and then a few final shots on the corner of Turnpike Lane station.
The filmer then continued on to Kings Cross.
Of note is the vintage of the rather bizarre junction layout at Frobisher/Green Lanes. That junction feels like a modern layout to me, but here it is, just the same, in 1985.
The first 8 minutes are locally relevant. Drivers didn’t half thrash the proverbials off the buses of the time!
Brought back happy memories of working on Routemasters. I notice the bus getting rescued wasn’t one!
The comment about ‘thrashing’ the buses, without getting too technical, the design of the old ‘traditional’ bus with the front wheel right out under the driver gave a ride and handling akin to a very large car. However, ‘modern’ buses with their incredibly short wheelbase roll and pitch about giving a horrible queasy feeling to their unfortunate inmates. The old buses were designed around the passenger, the modern bus is designed purely for the accounts department. What once was a pleasure is now a torture. Rant over, my nurse is coming now...
Can’t argue with you! They certainly zip round corners alright! I do like using the ones supplied by Epping and Ongar Railway when the Piccadilly drivers are on strike.
Routemaster Heaven! I have lived here for thirty years and was surpised to see how little has really changed. I use these routes a lot and its nice to recognize so many features.
Fantastic film - great scenes of 'my' buses back in the day. Those RMs looked great in the 60s but even by 85 they were looking out of date (Boris, you silly little man). And those 80s cars! Why some of them weren't even rusty!
I remember with horror, how many times they would cut up us cyclists after speeding past us and then breaking last minute to stop at the bus stop. Terrible, hated them. Got run off the road so many times
thankfully with the introduction of bendy buses, they also changed their training to encorporate cyclists, it appears. As since then I’ve found buses to be so considerate
Mostly! Although I've had a couple of close calls with bus drivers who panic when they realise they have to stop in the middle of overtaking you.
The smart move would be to abandon the overtake, but not all of them are actually that smart...!
Running through the films I actually counted four clear traffic offences when buses pulled out with no warning in front of a vehicle which had to brake!
