Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has anyone got PVC fence panels? Will it stop ivy from next door?Opinions please?

I am looking at possibly replacing one side of the garden fence with PVC panels, has anyone got those and can share a personal review please?

I do not really like the look of them but for 3 years now I am wasting my time picking up ivy/bramble coming through a wooden fence from next door and frankly I am fed up.

There seems to be nothing I can do about the ivy, do not want to fight with the neighbour who loves his ivy and bramble and whatever else (all coming through the fence) so I wonder if a PVC fence could be a solution to that?

I am hoping it would stop dreaded ivy attaching itself and growing through to my side.

Photo above -  the garden when I moved in 3 years ago, next door ivy loving neighbour does not see a problem....it was 3ft deep into my side. I cleared it BUT it keep on growing through...

Previous tenant here never used the garden as you can see on the photo - I got all under control but hate wasting time pulling ivy off all the time. It ruined the fence, even when I pul it off, of course the "tracks" are there and look awful

Would PVC fence be better?

Nothing will stop ivy climbing up a fence.

I think ivy can be really pretty - covers up ugly fencing, just needs a bit of a trim now and again to keep it in check. You'll find it hard to stop, so much easier to embrace it!

I really sympathise, we have the same problem. Can you be really brutal and cut back some of the main ivy stems (rather than just trimming, which probably just encourages more growth).

In my view a pvc fence would look pretty grim - I’d rather cut back the ivy on a wooden one. But I can’t visualise what pvc would look like so I may be being unkind (wouldn’t it look like a big expanse of plastic in your garden)? And unless it has no gaps at all I would imagine the ivy will find a way through...

I don’t know how much better pvc would be than wood - it would partly depend on how the fence was constructed and whether there were any gaps. But I can see the appeal of just starting again with a blank slate.

I’m guessing from what you’ve already said there isn’t any kind of compromise you could come to with your neighbour, even if it’s just going onto his or her side and cutting it back really severely? If they knew the alternative was a new fence (presumably with a lot of the ivy being removed with the old fence) that might be more appealing?

Is that fence your responsibility or the neighbour’s?
