We live the Wightman Rd end of Lausanne Rd and can routinely hear what we've started calling the Harringay Bell and Horn. A 2 or 3 times a day ringing of a bell, followed by a long horn noise. Last happened 11.45am this morning. Can anyone tell us what it is? We're so curious!

Clearly these sounds are the North Wightman spirits of the Synagogue and St Peter's High Anglican Church (now the Greek Orthodox) doing their best to synchronise the Angelus Bell with the blowing of the Shofar or Ram's Horn, as close to Noon and 6.00pm as possible. If they sound a little subdued, uncertain and unpunctual it probably springs from a certain ghostly reticence and politeness in the face of relatively recent invasion of God's Half-Acre by Greek Orthodox, Muslim and Gospel Centre Pentecostalist blow-ins. Hope this helps, Patricia. Btw, are you, and Charlotte, perhaps Jewish or (High) Anglican or Catholic by background, or maybe a blend of two or three of these? They say it takes generations to wear off.
Oddly enough, the Sunday services at the Gospel Centre start with a prolonged blast on a shofar.
11am and no bells.
Thanks John. I should have checked with the Missus.
We are no longer local but we have a scrap merchant who drives around here who rings a handbell out of his van window followed by a blast on his horn to let people know he is around. Maybe it is something similar?
I'm the other side of GL, off St Ann's, and have also often heard a horn blowing - usually three blasts and normally around 11 - 11.30am. It sounds very close but I've never been able to pin down exactly where it's from; I'd wondered if it signalled the end of school break time, but it sometimes sounds during holidays, so can't be that. The Angelus bell used to chime at noon every day from the Catholic church on West Green Road, but this seems to have stopped in the last couple of years. The suggestion about a scrap merchant announcing his presence does seem likely, especially as it's irregular, and might explain why it's audible here as well as over on Lausanne. Hadn't thought about religious use, but it has a very distinctive low note, which could indicate a shofar or similar, though I think the nearest synagogue (at least) is well south of Manor House and this seems much closer.
We have lived at the top of Frobisher for 23 years and as far as we can remember there hasn’t been a day when we haven’t heard the bell and horn. It has been a mystery in our family for decades. It happens around 11am and 8pm every day. I have a video of it but not sure how to attach!
Oops, managed to turn it into a link! This is a video from last week of the bell
Haven't heard the bell but that's exactly the horn I've heard for years! It sounds louder here (Glenwood Road) so is possibly closer, though that might just be the sound level on your recording; but we're quite a way from the Greek Orthodox church.
That's it! 23 years of mystery. Someone must know!
Intriguing. Someone must know what it is. I'd hazard a guess at it being something from the Greek Orthodox church.
