Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
HoL's Historical Photos Collection
The clunkiness of HoL's image organisation system has become increasingly apparent as HoL's collection of history photos has grown. I've been putting off doing anything about it. But now there are approaching 2,000 images, I've finally finally given in and made a start.
So, instead of the previous rather haphazard collection of album thumbnails which was the only way of accessing the history albums, I've now set up a page listing all the albums. I hope it's a more amenable format. You can access that list via the drop-down from the Gallery tab in the black strip above, (just below the HoL banner).
Another downside to HoL's images system is that, unlike the rest of the site, the images don't seem to get very well crawled by Google. Despite that, in one way or another, our stuff does seem to get picked up - and I've been amazed by who.
In the past few years HoL's images have been requested by the Smithsonian Museum and used to support a debate by a member of House of Lords. Last year HoL was added as a reference in the Library of Congress.
Beyond those august reachings, I'm aware that the majority of people have got over the novelty of Harringay having a history (remember when I started doing this is 2007, and wrote Harringay’s history in a a series of Wikipedia articles, there was nothing anywhere about our history, other than the odd mention at the end of histories of Horney & Tottenham).
So I may be targeting a limited audience (sometimes no greater that one). But, I carry on because HoL acts as as a kind of public scrapbook to add some of my images (yes there are a lot more!) and some of the stuff that makes it out of the research note-book. I also often find that those who are interested really help to dig out answers I wouldn't have found on my own. I find that a very valuable and rewarding aspect of history on HoL too.
The next stage of organisation of the history material will be to start to index the images as part of an index of all the history stuff on HoL. I wonder how long I'll put that off for!

You may well be able to add to the history by checking a 'new' site of aerial photos of which you may not be aware. Although in its infancy it will provide specific, as well as general, photos of interest. Check out the link. https://www.cambridgeairphotos.com/

For what it's worth, I find a lot of them don't load for me. Windows 7, Chrome v74 running at 1680x1050.
I get the text, but no image. Shame that so many of them are almost thumbnail size by today's standards too.

Really? They don't load? Can you give me an example of one, please? I don't experience this issue (a url and a screen shot). Ning have been awful with their image management. A very small number of the earlier pictures have disappeared. Where there have been interesting comments added, to preserve them I've added the pictures back as a comment and indicated the same in the text under the space for the original picture. But that only affects a dozen or so our of the whole number,
Not sure what you mean about so many of them being thumbnail size, Paul. Most are at their full size relative to their original - and did you find the View Full Size button? Not all, but a good number expand to bigger than original size.
There are a very few smaller images that I added in the early days, but if they're smaller than postcard size unless they're very interesting, I tend not to upload them.

Ah I seem to have worked it out. Rebooted everything from PC to router and they're loading now. It feels like the forum is pulling the image data from somewhere different to the rest of the page as a few displayed a blank area where the picture should be for 5-10 seconds before appearing. I see the full size image on a few now too - thanks.
