Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

BEFORE the Euro Elections, Liz drew our attention to an interesting quiz whose intention was to help us decide which party to vote for in the European Elections. It was based around Euro-issues.

I came across a similar questionnaire which tests general political attitudes based on one's responses to a series of propositions. It has nothing to do with political parties directly.

Political Compass contains a link "take the test" and if you do it, it will plot your responses on a two dimensional scale. You can compare your general outlook with politicians like Margaret Thatcher, Robert Mugabe, Stalin, Hitler, Mahatma Ghandi and others.

It takes three to five minutes to find out if you a centrist or an extremist!

Link's not working - try this one www.politicalcompass.org/
Thanks Hugh. I've edited the link and it should be working now ...
Move over, Mahatma, y'ole liberal lefty - you're sitting on my little grid square. Nice wheel you've got there , so spin us a yarn.
Budge up OAE, I'm squeezing in next to you and Ghandi.

Great link, thanks Clive.
Done this one a few years ago but I am pretty much the same. Just south west of Mohandas, looks like we're sharing the dahl!
I'm a little East-South-East of Ghandi (and the rest of you- gosh, it's hard to see where the worlds going wrong when we're all such lovely, caring lefties!)

But there are a lot of questions on this poll that you can't answer with an agree/disagree- they aren't black and white issues.
For example:
"A significant advantage of a one-party state is that it avoids all the arguments that delay progress in a democratic political system" - well I wouldn't tolerate a one party state, but it certainly avoids the messy business of democracy
"There are no savage and civilised peoples; there are only different cultures" my gut instinct is to agree, but actually I think most cultures can be both savage and civilised
"It is a waste of time to try to rehabilitate some criminals" well yes and no: everyone deserves a second chance, but isn't it a waste of time to "rehabilitate" political prisoners? Isn't that shorthand for the type of "extraordinary rendition" that the CIA (and friends) have been practicing? Nelson Mandela was a prisoner: would it have made the South African regime less or more brutal if they had tried to "rehabilitate" him?
"Nelson Mandela was a prisoner: would it have made the South African regime less or more brutal if they had tried to "rehabilitate" him? "

That's not the question - I think it would have been a waste of time, yes.

Slap bang in the middle, me :-) Is that good ?
That's not the question - but it gives me pause to consider my answer to "It is a waste of time to try to rehabilitate some criminals"
I think that the question is weighted towards the idea that some crimes and some criminals are unforgivable and irredeemable (which I don't believe is true) so I'd like to disagree with the statement. However in the extreme example I've given, I have to agree with the statement.
But agreeing with it would drag my profile towards the Authoriarian right - thereby skewing the outcome.
I agree. The trouble with these simplistic surveys is that they can't take account of nuances of opinion. eg, in answer to your Q I think it would have been a waste of time because Mandela was so strong willed, not because his alleged "crimes" were so heinous as to preclude rehabilitation.
I'm sure, too, that some of the individual answers ticked by any one of the four of us who landed more or less on the Mahatma grid square would horrify the remaining three.
On both axis? That's good. Moderation in all things.

Only one caveat: I wonder if you can look artificially moderate by one particularly right wing view cancelling out a particularly left wing view (I accept this may not be likely) to create an average that puts you in the centre.
I don't have any particularly left-wing views :-)
