Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm currently renovating one of our double bedrooms. We recently bought the property (2 years ago) and have had to strip the previous wall paper. A problem arose when we noticed that the previous plaster was crumbling at the slightest touch, I suspect it needs to be removed down to the brick for the exterior wall and to the lath for the interior. Has anyone had issues like this before? If so, is it expensive, what did you do? I've been told a bonding agent can be used to fix it as well. The house is relatively old (125 years) and all the walls in the bedroom have the same problem.

Mod, please remove to correct category if it's in the wrong place.

All help appreciated.

Just get it reskimmed. You may only need to get it reskimmed which will cost you about £300/400.  Any bits that are really badly crumbling you would then use the bonding agent.

There  are some good plasterers on here.

Sounds to me like some of your plaster at least needs redoing. You can have some success using bonding plaster but that's not intended for long runs. I'd get a good plasterer around and get some quotes. You could ask him to quote to patch up what's patchable and  redo what's not. In part it depends on how log you intend to stay in your house and what your relationship is with perfection. Don't forget that this is the time to think about any rewiring you need doing!
