Can anyone recommend a tree?
Can anyone recommend a tree to plant in our medium sized garden? Preferably reaching around 5m tall and not toxic to dogs (and no fruit or berries as our dog eats everything!). We are overlooked and would like a bit of privacy in the garden. Evergreen or deciduous would be fine. Thank you.

Look at the range of wonderful Acers available. If you avoid obviously large trees, most trees can be kept to your target size without too much work, using judicious pruning when needed.

Thanks, Hugh! Do Acers grow well in the local soil? I know that they can be quite picky.

As far as I know, they do. I have one in the middle of my garden. It's an Acer Negundo Flamingo - not sure it's the best variety, but it was here when we arrived and is nice enough to keep. The foliage is quite light coloured and it acts like a gently glowing beacon. Mine's dropped its leaves now so library images below:
and there's a lovely one at something like 40 Hewitt. I'm not sure which variety, but it's a reddy bronze with palmate type leaves.

Amelanchier are popular in small gardens; Betula ulitis (himalayan silver birch), are lovely too, just choose a small variety; Eucalyptus and Magnolia can also be relatively small - it all depends on the variety you choose, so do do a bit of research before buying.
We put in a multi-stem Betula utilis var. jacqumontii ‘Greyswood Ghost’, over 12 years ago. From 3m, it's now about 7m high and has a similar spread, it gives lovely dappled shade all summer, and has wonderful bark year round. We keep it in check with a visit from the tree surgeon every few years.This website is useful reference:

Those trees already mentioned are beautiful, please, please, please consider planting a native tree species though. Our gardens have such an important role to play in creating habit, shelter & food sources for our struggling wildlife. Both Dogwood & Goat Willow sound as though they'd fit your criteria.
