Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just drove up Green lanes between Sainsbury’s and Manor House and encountered a very strong smell of gas. Have reported and apparently lots of others have too. In the meantime maybe don’t go for a walk in the area!

Thanks for helpful responses, there seemed to be big delays with the 341 so have decided to just walk to fin park for 4 instead.

Also for info. This was the right move. Traffic from Manor House to Finsbury Park looked stationary the whole way so those buses might be super slow today even with the diversions if they're rejoining regular routes.

Was just going to add you could have walked down to Chestnuts Park as the 341 is turning left out of Black Boy Lane. But you appear to have had a better idea.

Routes 29 141 341 N29 are on diversion due to the closure of Green Lanes between Manor House and Endymion Road following the discovery of a gas leak. Buses northbound are diverting From Green Lanes and turning right Seven Sisters Road, left St Ann's Road, right Haringay Road, left Colina Road, right Green Lanes to usual line of route.

Thanks for the clear and helpful update Hugh.

If Finsbury Park is going to be used as a pedestrian diversion at night, please arrange some emergency lighting, and uniformed staff around to help people in wheelchairs, older people, etc. Last night the park was pitch black, and very dangerous. (That's why it's kept closed after dusk!). There was a murder/rape here last year, the ground is very rough, lots of trees and a canal.

Thanks to the staff who turned out last night to address the problem, but the general level of information and support for the public was very poor (9.30pm). There was no information on the trains or at the station. One fire officer was at the south end. (It's not his job to manage pedestrians). One police officer was at the north end trying to cope with pedestrians, residents, angry drivers from Sainsburys who could see a green traffic light but him telling them to stop, etc. There needs to be clear information as alternative routes are not simple in this area, and there must be CPOs or other staff to help people with mobility problems and women who do not want to be alone in that park.

Thanks again to those who were trying to help.

Dr Chris Williams

I agree about the use of the park at night. Local police have been reporting a spike in violent night-time robberies there. People ought to be aware of this and use the park with real caution at night.

Hugh

Have you ever been in an inquest or other courts when nice hard-working public service staff or company managers are suddenly being blamed for death or injury, and the press are looking for a story? It should be compulsory training, and then foolish comments and decisions might be avoided.

Based on your reply, an Official Solicitor would probably challenge you on the basis of blaming the victims, and trying to pass responsibility to untrained members of the public. The HSE would point out that Cadent has a legal duty to 'ensure' the safety of the public in relation to all its activities. The owners of the Park (3 LAs) are initially accountable for safety, but that does not mean they are responsible/liable if others intervene.  If other entities have told people to use the Park in an emergency, then the liability for injuries/death may pass, in whole or in part, to them. But guess which name the press would pick up. Probably not the people who run the Park.

I can assure you that after court cases, in circumstances like this, few managers return to their jobs. They are either sacked, put on long-term sick leave, or take early retirement. Sorry, but I write long and dreary academic books about these things, have trained police and judges, and worked with Home Office staff and ministers to develop legislation, etc. If you think someone other than Cadent is failing in a duty of care, then make sure you make that very clear to them in writing, follow-up to ensure action, and keep a good audit trail. At present, Cadent is 'on legal notice' of possible risks to the public.

It is interesting to note that when there is a corporate event in the Park, there are generators, fully adequate temporary lighting, and numerous all night security staff with dogs helping and protecting people to ensure public safety. So why not when there is an emergency?

You might also check why the mains services are regularly broken at this site. The bridge is very old and weak, and very heavy articulated lorries often try to maneuver in very dangerous ways into the side roads. As a result, they regularly demolish traffic lights, bollards, crash fences and, I suspect, the service pipes. This needs a long-term solution.

Thanks again to the frontline people who are spending many hours trying to repair the problem and help people, and to local residents who are obviously trying to redress the failings of those who have legal responsibility for safety.

Thanks, but you’re going to have to help me relating what you’ve written to anything I’ve written. Blaming the victims? I don’t see any links. You sure you mean me?

Too true - 1.30am last night a police officer suggested I walk through by myself as a young woman, to which I laughed ‘I’d rather not get murdered or raped tonight thanks’. It’s not their fault but TFL should have addvised them on alternative routes as they were stood there all night with no knowledge and unable to help people.

This seems like daft advice.  The police need challenging on this. I’ll pass on a comment to a local police panel member.

I contacted police panel member Ian Sygrave. Lest the road should be closed again tonight, he's spoken to the Chief Inspector in Haringey who's confirmed that the word will go out to change this practice. (Of course it could have been Haringey or Hackney police involved - or Islington if it was at the Finsbury Park Gate. I hope that whicever division it was, the word will filter out).
