Hello,
I know this is not 'on our patch', but the Ward's Corner Community Coalition have been fighting the Council and developers Grainger plc over a proposal to tear down the historic Wards Corner building by Seven Sisters Tube and displace the local market traders and shopkeepers.
They are involved in a judicial review of the process, and urgently need donations. Their appeal is appended below.
Cheers
Geoff
WARDS CORNER COMMUNITY COALITION FUNDING APPEAL FOR JUDICIAL REVIEW
The WCC would like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to all those who have supported the campaign so far. Without you we would not have had the mandate to go forward. A real community spirit has developed and we have shown that we are cohesive and united. The £8,000 raised so far shows an amazing strength of feeling about this cause which was both astonishing and humbling.
We have been successful at Stage One and a date has been set for the main hearing on 16th and 17th June. Even though Grainger have lost £143 million and have no plans to develop until 2011, they had asked in court for the case to be rushed through – a move that we find puzzling. Perhaps they hope to shore-up their ailing portfolio before selling-on the planning permission for Wards Corner???
As a result we need to fund-raise urgently. Haringey Council and Grainger would be delighted if we withdrew due to lack of funding but we must not let them win by default. We can do this with your continued help and support and if we are successful with this mass appeal for donations. Whatever you can afford – be it £5 or £50 - alongside our other fundraising efforts (see attached leaflet), will make a valued contribution to this campaign.
We must stop Haringey Council and Grainger from destroying livelihoods and buildings at Wards Corner, especially in these uncertain and worrying times. Sustainable re-use of existing buildings, enabling existing businesses and livelihoods to benefit from regeneration has always been “the better plan”. And that can happen if we, as a community, overturn at Judicial Review, Haringey Council’s incomprehensible decision to prefer a failing developer peddling an unsustainable plan, to the manifest wishes of the local community.
