Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all,

Is it just me or has the rubbish/litter/flytipping situation become a lot worse on the Ladder roads in recent months. We live on Warham Road and recently more and  more litter has been dumped on the sidewalk (from beanbag to mattresses, plastic bags full of household waste etc etc). When walking around it is hard not to come across milk cartons, plastic bags and cans rolling around on the roads.

I have been reporting those on the Haringey council website and have been shocked to see the amount of reports/complaints on their website/area map.

One problem seems to be that some multi-occupancy houses do not have enough bins to cope with the waste. How can we alert the council? What other measures can be taken besides alerting council?

We are all paying a very decent amount in council tax and we should be able to get decently cleaned roads and sidewalks for that.

Muswell Hill "lost"? Really?

Is there anything we could collectively do to fund something private for collection?

How much does that kind of thing cost? Is it permitted?

I appreciate it's not right that it should have to be this way, but it's just so depressing.

Hi Matt,

The problem is that the dumping is happening all across the Ladder roads with all sorts of rubbish being spilled. We could try and organise a neighbourhood clean up (similar to the park clean ups in the area) and raise awareness.

I like the idea of going public as suggested by Kotkas. There is nothing better than a neighbourhood standing together and addressing and issue is a community. In the long-run it should be beneficial for the area incl house prices.

That kind of thing feels positive. I live in St Ann's, but the problem is the same.

West Green Rd is also a tip between Catholic Church and Green gate common.

Community focus would be great if we could mobilise.

Sadly it seems the business owners and the traders association couldn't give a toss, they need to pull thier effing socks up. The vast majority of mess is caused by the shops and the flats above, many of which are owned by the shop owners.

Not just the ladder. Chestnuts Park is consistently covered in rubbish year-round. Wardens clear up the obvious bits on pathways but the litter in hedgerows and off the beaten track is just there for good it seems.

It's been mentioned before but there used to be skip days where you could take large items. I can't quite remember how often these were or how many skips were put on the Ladder.

As someone who doesn't own a car this was very useful.

There is also the Ladder Community Safety Partnership which meets to discuss this sort of thing AND also takes action. Maybe we could use this forum too?

Who would be up for meeting up soon to discuss how we can collectively take action?  Im sure between us he have heaps of great ideas. Something needs to happen people!!

I'm in. Where and when can we meet?

Yes, I would be keen to discuss. It annoys me so much I'd like to at least feel I'm trying to do something about it

How about Sunday 19th August? Beans and Barley?

I'm in. Sunday 19th at B&B. Suppose someone should bring a broom so we know who we are. What time? 11am?
