Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi - We are going to have a side extension done soon and are trying to plan the interior of our new kitchen but are having problems visualizing the space. I was wondering if any kind HoL'ers who have had side extensions and new kitchens could share some tips? It would be great to see some of the spaces to give us an idea.

Thanks!

There are a few homes dotted around the Ladder with side returns, just walk around and knock on some doors, they can only say no. Otherwise grid paper, solid blocks for cabinets and furniture items, and move them around. Slow design, allows ideas to sift and get to the point where your happy with your long term decisions.
+ Insta some material samples & few magazines beside for inspiration, create a mood board, as Interior designers do.

Our kitchen was ex demo, so I had to rebuild it to suit the space, my only pre requisite was I wanted to be able to look out to the garden while washing up, this created an elbow, dividing the dining area/children’s play area from the rest of the kitchen. and stops the children having a clear run past hot food cooking for safety. These incidentals will inform your decisions. Don’t Don’t forget the triangle of sink, fridge oven and larder, though that sounds like a square!

My other thought was I didn’t want counter space interrupted so we have a bar fridge freezer, though I could gain more cupboard space now, by getting rid of the fridge completely, (using a large amount of electricity,) and making a cold larder in the cellar with a stone base, as Victorians did, (cheaper than a new fridge.) I lived like this for 6 weeks in France, & my dad is a retired refrigeration engineer, so I’ll be aware of managing food temperatures. I’ll experiment first.

Apologies for not replying sooner! Have just sent you a PM.

We have also had one and would be happy to share tips etc

Just sent you a connection request - thanks!

Ok. Have responded I think

We used a kitchen planner I found on Houzz because we didn't know where to start with ours! She had us fill in a questionnaire of everything we wanted from the space then went away and came up with five or six plans that we whittled down to our dream kitchen over the space of a week. Her fee (which was very reasonable) was worth every penny because it took all stress and uncertainty out of it, and she provided all the measurements, CAD drawings etc, and exact cabinetry we needed for us to give to the kitchen company and our builder. It made it so easy. Happy to DM you her details if you want.

Just added you as a connection

Grace Wasyluk (who is on here) could help you, she's a local interior designer who, among other things, can help with visualisation :)
