Hello,
Basically do not do this: it is illegal in the Borough of Haringey: but not in every borough. It is a fine of £150 reduced to £90 as I have found to my cost!
Does Haringey advertise this sort of thing? Apparently you can sell your car on the street in Hackney!
Also some queries about the amount of time you have to pay by the time you receive the notice!!

Hmm, surprised, there are always hundreds of cars doing this on Endymion road, I've never seen a fine placed on them. (assuming it was just a piece of paper stuck in the car saying "for sale")

It is very strange as it I see For Sale signs on cars all over Haringey!! Needs further investigation: anyone know about the legality / implementation of this law / by law!?

I can understand how annoying it could be for one household to take many parking spaces never moving the vehicle(s) that's for sale until it is sold and driven away. i have seen a whole street taken up by some dodgy private car seller/mechanic that also works on the vehicles kerbside with all the nasty fluid spills that go with this practice including broken glass and old batteries. Also, the roadside cannot be cleaned under a semi-permanently parked vehicle.
As usual a few idiots make life difficult and spoil everything for ordinairy folk to put a 'for sale' sign in the window of their single vehicle.

I am not a dealer, and only want to sell one car. Also this could not happen or would not be economically viable in a charging zone as I am - at £100 per annum for 2nd car and beyond! Do not even know if they would issue the permits!!

Has been illegal for many years - To sell a Vehicle on the Highway -
Especially if not registered to a Local person
A individual can sell their own Car - respond to fixed Notice
But not a commcercial body - Especially if vehicles are untaxed & registered
Sure All borough's can use the legislation - depends how much a problem it causes them
Council used to have a team to clear them - but was budget cut years ago
Believe it's left to Police more these day's
Most was operated by Commerical Car Sales Teams
Most was unregistered and untaxed
Was even on the TV in Life of Grime series -

it is registed to me and is my own car.
It is taxed and MOT and has a parking permit on it!
What does this mean?

I bow to Bob Ruggles' obvious professional expertise. Though as a councillor I've been sympathetic when people have told me e.g. they only want to stick a 'For Sale' sign on their late dad's car.
I will ask about Haringey's policy and post the answer.

Thank you for your enquiry received on 1 May 2009.
The procedure that we have adopted for dealing with nuisance dealers, specifically related to vehicles being sold in the course of a trade or business, is to use powers under London Local Authorities Act regarding illegal street selling. As it is an offence to offer to sell anything on the public highway without a valid street trading license. In the majority of cases this procedure has proven to be very effective in removing unwanted and nuisance vehicles being sold by traders that take up valuable parking spaces from local residents.
If anyone is found selling a vehicle without a street trading license, enforcement officers may issue that trader a fixed penalty notice (FPN). If the FPN is not paid within a fixed period of time the trader will be prosecuted. The Council have introduced an appeal process for those people to receive FPN’s and on appeal if the vehicle owner can show that the vehicle is registered in their name and was parked outside or very close to the registered owner's address, the council will consider this to be a private sale and in many cases withdraw the FPN.
The Council believe that this is a fair and proportionate way to tackle nuisance vehicles and believe that our procedures take into account local residents' concerns regarding private vehicle sales.

Glad to hear it! I am not a trader: just an individual resident selling one car!! I have just applied to the appeal service.
I am surpised but happy at your more lenient attitude: the FPN issuer did not have an attitude like this: and did not inform me about the appeals procedure.

Thanks Alan that is very clear and good news for private single car sellers.
what about though, the person selling multiple cars parked in their street. Will they be able to appeal because the vehicle FPN'ed is near their address ? or haven't we got that far yet.

I would think the person selling cars as a business would not normally bother to register them in his/her name. Any time I have bought a car the reg document is in the name of the previous owner.
There used to be a lot of cars for sale along St Ann's Road a few years ago. Sellers (generally hanging about smoking and chatting to each other) all looked remarkably East European. I gather action was taken against them.
