......and it wasn't the last time. She was here again the following year.

I might have been there myself in 1956 Pat Smythe was something of a hero at the time and I was encouraged to take riding lessons in Southgate at a place called Blagden's Lane, if I remember...
Not sure which years this was but my family always went to the Horse of the Year at Harringay Arena - it moved to I think Wembley in the 50s or 60s? I seem to recall the Royal Show took place there at least once.
Date at right-hand top of Tatler page is 24 October 1956.
Aha! missed that =- so I was probably there!
I always went down to see the horses, stabled around the rear of the arena and stadium. Memorable was the smell, the sight of the beautiful magnificent horses - and one heard famous names like Pat Smythe, Harry Llewellyn and ‘Foxhunter’ and the seeing the glamorous Irish and Italian contestants and horses - was a real thrill – they were the celebrities of those days.
Sometimes – part way through the evening, one of the staff seeing our keen interest would let us in to the arena and we’d sometimes get a ring-side seat.
Fond memories.
I can remember seeing the Queen at Harringay Arena with Prince Phillip at one of the horse shows but not sure whether it was 1956 or 57.
