Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
motorbikes speeding down Harringay Road
every day from around 5.30am there are a number of motorbikes (or maybe just the same one) that speeds down Harringay Road (the part that joins west green road). It is really loud, disturbing and dangerous.
i haven't been able to see any number plates but wondered if anyone had any advice on what best to do in order to make a complaint about this. Is it the council? Police?
am I the only one who hears this? I assume the issue nust also affect Stanley Road, but there's speed bumps there so perhaps not.
what are everyone's thoughts?

I really, really sympathise with you. Living outside a speedhump with an early morning wakeup via the traffic is horrible, especially 15 minutes or so before your alarm. You could fight it but I don't see how in this case unless you're prepared to take some drastic, early morning action. I've only ever managed to get commercial vehicles to stop doing this, and that's after a lot of phone calls and emails.
If I could do it over, I'd take more defensive steps. Double glazing for a start. Don't sleep with your head at the very front of the house too. I know that's not great but I have years of experience in this and it hasn't really turned out well. Good luck.

LOL this is a hilarious idea. I'm always in my PJs feeding my baby at that time anyway so I bet I would give them quite a shock!

One thing you can try, if you have a camera or (better still) an old flash unit, let it off from your (open) window as the motorbike passes. The rider wont have a clue where the flash came from and may assume that they've been caught on a speed camera. With any luck they'll either slow down or speed somewhere else. On a camera, if you manually block the lens the flash should auto to max light.

Or stand outside your house in high viz pointing your hairdryer at the motorists, they might be fooled into thinking it's a speed gun. There was an article about this a while back (below) - I've been tempted to do it myself on Hermitage Road!

No advice but I sympathise. We use to have a person living a few doors away who had an old motorbike. Every morning between 6 and 6.30 am he would start it up with lots of spluttering then leave the engine running for a few minutes before noisily riding off.
Luckily I had to get up about 6.45 so it meant I didn't have to set an alarm and thankfully he moved away after about 6 months.

Playing devils advocate here, I am assuming you can't tell the difference between a 125cc and a 600cc at 20MPH. It's quite possible that it isn't a speeding motorcyclist, but one that is riding at 20MPH in first gear (Change point on most > 500CC bikes from first to second is 22 -24MPH).
At 05:30 who is it dangerous to?

no I cannot tell what type of bike it is and, quite frankly, I dont care.
it is loud and anti social to speed down a quiet road at that time!
it is dangerous to anyone who might be out at that time. Speed limits don't just stop in the night! Also, it isn't just 5.30am, it can happen at 7.30am, too.

My point was, how do you know they are speeding? If you have no idea what the bike is and it's mechanical constraints. If it's a case of not speeding and having to use a lower gear to stick to the 20MPH limits then you'll have increased revs as a result.

I have raised the issue with the police at a NW meeting regarding illegal noisy exhausts, and blantant disregard for the Highway Code in the borough.
