Content moderation on Harringay Online
There is an interesting article in the Atlantic where they talk about the unaccounted for cost of user generated content on Facebook and sites that get their content the same way. HarringayOnline is now more than ten years old and I remember in the early days that the biggest worry was that it would disappear and a "sustainability group" was started.
Now it strikes me that I've not been particularly cognisant of this side of the work, despite being exposed to it many times. Considering the qualifications and experience that Liz and Hugh have brought to this job that is being done by people in America working at night and being paid 2c for every naughty image they flag, we've been very fortunate. I'd also point out that by and large, we are a very well behaved online community.
Now when it comes to paying for this moderation, we're literally getting their labour for free. This from the article I linked to above:
"Facebook, too, has committed to hiring 10,000 more people dedicated to these issues. Their executives are all clearly thinking about these issues. This week, Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos tweeted that “there are no magic solutions” to several “fundamental issues” in online speech. “Do you believe that gatekeepers should police the bounds of acceptable online discourse?” he asked. “If so, what bounds?”"
I can't say the same for Facebook.

So on chatboard where no one can agree whether Neil someone er-ather is a good plumber are all expert on US Constitutional law and politics?
You (all as far as I've seen to date--nothing personal I address ideas not people), who really know absolutely nothing of what you are talking about, would moderate me, one who educates you and knows facts and history but for your wilful desire to remain ignorant to reality?
I will always make the point that free speech doesn't protect polite speech. That speech doesn't need protection. And as always, this is a private venue there is no free speech right here save to the owner's pleasure.
You said in some aborted post you'd turn your back on the US president whose country, my country, ensured you don't speak German. Why should I not take you to task when you and everyone here hasn't made a single argument worth considering to support their irrational rage and hatred. Councillors whose accomplishments I still haven't been told of.
Why don't you read this and then come back for a chat. I would add to the list that the president has a new immigration policy that will be beneficial to combat Islamic terrorism (there is only one kind--I am still waiting for that guy from Finsbury Park last summer to be formally charged). Something Europe can't do.
