Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

OK, we've covered cockroaches and mice, and someone else can do a much better job discussing the joys of young women being 'clicked' at, so what are we going to do about the phlegm?

Harringay is awash with spit, and given the large numbers of unvaccinated people drifting up and down Green Lanes coughing their lungs up it's no wonder the borough is a tuberculosis hotspot.

The council is now putting the boot in on people who chuck cigarettes out of car windows but how do we go about discouraging people from hockling on our pavements?

For me, 3.00 AM mob justice seems the kindest solution, but I'd welcome other suggestions.

Have to admit to not having noticed any spiting at all CML. I'm sure others will let us know what they see.
I've heard the council are buying a heat and methane detector gun for people who break wind in the street. Oh god I'm looking at a twenty year stretch!
Trumping in the open air normally last secs and the fresh air clears it pretty darn quickly.

Now breaking wind in a confined space such as a bus or tube - now that's just WRONG. I know you drive a scooter B2 so as far as I'm concerned Birdy you happily trump away ;o)
Spitting in Harringay has been raised in another thread here before where people are concerned about this, but unfortunately I've not been able to find it.

I agree with your comments Cml. I frequently see people "gobbing" on the street and I find it dirty and insulting. There's been a few occasions when men (I'm not discriminating - I've seen teenage girls spitting in the street too, but just not at me as in these situations) have got off a bus at the Endymion Road stop, as soon as the doors open they hurl phlegm right into the street, regardless of who is working past and who have the unfortunate grace to be within their range.

It is an anti-social, grim and ugly habit. My parents brought my brother and I up never to spit in the street as they saw it to be unhygenic and unnecessary. I now carry a packet of hankies and will happily hand them out to the louts who "gob" either at me or in my path. To all those spitting in the street - get some manners - PLEASE!
Annie, Finding things is perhaps easier than you think. I entered "spitting" in the search box, far top right corner. It gave me the post you were looking for, I think.
Thanks Hugh and sorry, I always forget the search box is up there. Is there a way of highlighting this a little more (or maybe it's me being blind and others don't have a problem finding the search function. I'm sure this has been discussed before - apologies if I'm raising old issues!) so it's more obvious?
As a cyclist who likes to "overtake" I have sometimes found myself the receiver of a gob of spit from the person I am about to zoom past who has not seen me yet. Only once in the face though...
A cyclist is engaging in robust, physical exertion and as a runner I've too often felt the need to spit, but have either swallowed it or got distracted and quickly forgotten about the need to.

I think in sport it's more acceptable because you're body is being pushed to the limit, but walking down the street is NOT vast physical exertion and therefore entirely unacceptable in my eyes. Having said that, I feel for you John, being spat in the face in any situation is not pleasant, but I'm sure you just strike it off as one of the few pitfalls of cycling, something however I'm not willing to do as a pedestrian.

Just got off the phone to the council regards the heat and methane detector gun. They've had to cancel that initiative on H&S grounds. They've only just realised that the little flame detector used on the said apparatus would cause random explosions. Still, could be quite entertaining, especially outside the Salisbury around 2am on a Saturday.
Just the thought of the Salisbury at 2am on a Sat is makin' me chortle :o))
Ok smokers, spitters.. what next - those who wear flared trousers or perhaps still have moustaches..

Shite I'm not coming... I love my flares..
What you choose to wear doesn't interest me in the slightest and flares really don't offend me (bring em back I say!) and don't impinge on my personal space (and also don't wet my cheek). Stephen - you're safe :)
