"A few clips of Harringay Greyhound Stadium, that held its final last race on 25th September 1987.
This after 60 years, Harringay being the third original British greyhound stadium built (1927). These glimpses of the best (safest) track in England (until neglected in the mid seventies). Before the bulldozers arrived. Very rare footage, in fact believed the only historical full night capture available.
The commercial cameras left at 8.30pm and the complete capture of the final night by me (amateur) is believed to be the only complete recording in existence, that includes all 13 races, recorded scenes for over 1 hour. In this clip see the very last winner and the dog that was the very last greyhound to gallop across the winning line at Harringay (13th race).
This the beginning of the end for our always loved and most attended sport.
Remembered along with all the the needlessly lost greyhound dogs, for which the "Gay" was just a small part of the destructive demise, of all the tracks lost forever to the developers profit.
Full permission for all footage was given by the 1987 track manager."

Where was it?
The Stadium was roughly where Sainsbury's is now - a little to the south. The Arena was rough where the Arena shopping centre is. This will give you a pretty good fix.
I was working at Finsbury Park Action Group at the time, and it was involved in the campaign against the Sainsbury's development. At the time many thought it would pose a threat to the many Turkish supermarkets and the bakeries on Green Lanes. Little did we know!
Worked there as a teenager 16-18 illegally as you were meant to be 18+ in the bars as a pot-man collecting glasses and on Saturdays to prep for Stock Car and Banger racing and to prep the bars and restaurants after Friday night racing. It had a faded splendour. Used to clear wads and wads of two pound win tickets from the American Bar where the trainers sat and drank largely for free as the punters plied them with drinks - ‘is he trying?
Definitely an education and some happy memories. Not so good for my school work however!
Timothy. do you perchance remember the Silver Hound restaurant?
Wonderfull memories. Spent many a Saturday night at the Stock car racing. I can smell it now.
