Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Thanks to Andrew Gillier for turning up this image of Challen's piano factory on Hermitage Road. Pretty much all the buildings shown in the image survive to this day. View on Google Street View

Here's the factory site in 1934. The photo is taken from one that appears on the Britiain From Above Wesbite. Its caption is:

"The British Woodcraft Ltd Piano and Joinery Works alongside Hermitage Road, Harringay, 1934"

So, Challen's "Most Modern Factory" must have been built just after. I wonder if the Silver Jubilee Piano was in part a celebration of their new Harringay factory, part corporate boast.

Here's a screenshot from the 1934 Post Office Directory confirming that it was British Woodcraft at the start of the year.

How incredible it is still standing! Is it listed? It has to be pretty rare. And thank you Hugh once again!

Yes, the buildings are still standing but sadly with none of the grandeur seen in the drawing above, as you can see in this picture.

Similar buildings can still be found in Vale Road (just round the corner).

Indeed, Eileen. Those buildings can be seen in the first photo of my potted history of the so-called Warehouse District.
