Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
From 40 St Mary's Road, Hornsey, c1960
One of a series of eight photos contributed by Peter Brooks whose paternal parents and grandparents lived in the St Mary's Road area of Hornsey.
This picture was taken from the bck room of the first floor of Peter's grandparents house at 40 St Mary's Road.
The victorian housing in the whole area was demolished in 1966. Those houses that were privately owned were compulsorily purchased. The area was built over with low rise flats and houses, all offered as council houses.
The excerpt below from the Ordnance Survey map of 1952 shows the roads.

I'm not sure of the exact location but I remember there being what we would call a corner shop ( that seemed to sell everything) I know that it was on the left hand side if you walked down Westfield Rd towards the High St. What I am sure of is that all the woodwork was painted an Orange colour. I remember being with my mother when she bought broken biscuits in there. I think the name of the shop was something like Bockfields?

There was also a Fruit shop on the corner of St Joseph’s and St Mary’s Road called Sid’s.

Great picture of "The Gang", Peter. What became of them I wonder ?

We have no idea John, we would love to know ourselves. What strikes me with this picture is their smart attire, i know from other pictures i've seen of this era that this was the norm. It still tickles me to think that a jacket, shirt and tie was the order of the day when out and about with your mates.

Hi Peter, Electoral registers have the Leggetts as living at 79 Westfield Rd and the Chrysostomou's living at 22 St Marys rd, at least in 1965. The Leggetts were at the same address from 1947 that I can see.
