One of a series of eight photos contributed by Peter Brooks whose paternal parents and grandparents lived in the St Mary's Road area of Hornsey.
This picture was taken from the bck room of the first floor of Peter's grandparents house at 40 St Mary's Road.
The victorian housing in the whole area was demolished in 1966. Those houses that were privately owned were compulsorily purchased. The area was built over with low rise flats and houses, all offered as council houses.
The excerpt below from the Ordnance Survey map of 1952 shows the roads.

Great view of Ally Pally.
From my mums recollections e, these are the friends she remembers in St Mary's Road. At No 15 was Bobby Horridge,No 36 was Allen Pearce, No38 was Derick Mathews, No 42 was the McBride family, Roy Lewis lived further up St Mary's but not sure of the number and No 25 was David Ryder.
Also, i know it reads that i grew up in St Mary's Road but i didn't, it's just that i haven't got around to telling Hugh of his mistake. Sorry Hugh. It was My Parents and Grandparents on my fathers side that lived there.
Mistake corrected.
Thanks Hugh.
Although very young at the time, it was pretty much the same view of AP from the back bedroom of my Nan's house at 60 Westfield Rd where my family lived when I was a child. As an aside, Lightfoot Rd was always known as Puddyfoot Rd. I'm guessing because cats are light on their paws.......but who knows how it originated?
Love that name. Puddifoot is a family name and there were a few around Hornsey. I wonder if there might have been a family link. The north side of the road was built as part of the St Mary's Estate through the British Land Company. The BLC bought land and sold it on, usually in many parcels to small developers. So, it's unlikely that there would have been a single developer who would have bequeathed his name to the road. A nice mystery. I'll keep my ear to the ground.
Re. Puddifoot, back in 1955 my school friend Mickey Puddifoot lived in the eye-catching Nicholl House. His father was in the petroleum buisiness and the family moved to Ipoh, Malasia.
Just a couple more families that my mum Jean recalls living in St Mary's rd and apologies if the spellings are incorrect. The Chrysostomou family lived somewhere between No 24 and 30 and the legget family lived further up, maybe No 44.
