Albums: Historical Images of Alexandra Palace & Park
Ever bemused that the grounds were our childhood playground without ever giving a thought to the significance and grandeur of the building!
I agree with Ken although my grandfather's passion for building television (three!) meant I was drawn to the BBC mast and thus found myself shamefacedly called down from our attempt to scale it one evening in about 1952 or 53. In fact a great many 'firsts' in the life of a young lad occurred on and sometimes under the various area of growth on the slopes...
In the late 40’s I’d go up there with my dad. We’d catch the single-decker bus from that back of Finsbury Park tube station. The building always seemed somehow spectacular and the views were wonderful. He told me about the first BBC studios there.
Years later I’d meet motorcycling friends there and sometimes see the BBC News motorcycle despatch rider delivering large film cans.
Always a beautiful event venue and I love Ally Pally and its history.
