Comment by andrew simmonds on April 29, 2024 at 6:47: At North Harringay School we had a demonstration of these new crossings prior to them being installed. Memory precludes me having all the details, but I remember a approx. 1/2 scale crossing set up in the school playground with a real car, motorbike and bicycle. A number of children were selected as "guinea pigs" and a quite exciting demo was unleashed upon us. There was some screeching of tyres so this was ether for effect or they were trying to inject a bit of realism into the proceedings by running one of us over. Must have worked though i've never seen a dead pelican in the road. (sorry)

Comment by Reginald summers on June 14, 2024 at 8:12: Hi Hugh i lived in Fairfax Road up to 1959 then moved to near Finsbury Park. I remember as a young boy going regularly going to Downhills Park. They used to have roads in miniature with traffic lights zebra crossings and other road signs, we used to pay something like sixpence to hire hire one their bikes to ride around those roads in miniature. It was great fun I never knew to this day what happened to that part of Downhills Park it just disappeared .

Comment by Kevin Nairn on June 14, 2024 at 8:24: Coburn And Hughes was a motor bike shop if I remember correctly. The folding doors fascinated me as a kid (I'm been a carpenter for 44 years). Across the road there was a shop that sold sports cars, they usually had two in the front of the shop. Anyone remember the shop or got a picture? I also remember Kerwin's that sold army surplus clothes, and A Jewish man opposite the Salisbury pub who owned a men's clothes shop. He was a really good salesman, as I was looking in the window and he dragged me in saying, come in, come in I've got lots of nice things here. I spent loadsa money!

Comment by Reginald summers on June 14, 2024 at 10:11: Before it was Coburn & Hugh's it was Strand Motorcycles, and not far from them on the other side there used to be a motorcycle shop called Banks . Not forgetting Brookers Motorcycle's at Queen's Parade it was one of mates mum that owned it.
