Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Carlingford College, West Green Road Opp Duckett's Common, c1920

Ever wondered what was in the strip at the top of West Green Road where there are terraces of 1960s houses now? Here's your answer. Up until 1910, the buildings were used as private houses.

Site of college indicated on 1914 Ordnance Survey map (Surveyed 1912)

Just to the right was willow Walk. The other side of that was the Green Gate pub.

Womersley House on 1873 Ordnance Survey map (Surveyed 1863-69)

Not so bad a walk. Google Maps says it would take 30 mins to walk it today.

What the picture on Wikipedia doesn't tell you is that Womersley House was probably named By Oxford Street retailer Peter Robinson who was born in Womersley Yorkshire and lived at Womersley House from about 1865 until his death in 1874. See Fig 12 here for a photo of the Oxford Street store and Fig, 5 here for a photo of his Regent Street store in 1910.
