Comment by Peter John Morris on August 30, 2019 at 9:21: I lived in Roseberry Gardens, the road you are looking down opposite. The ‘Controlled area’ was the experiment they ran where you you only cross Green Lanes via what were later known as ‘Pelican’ crossings. It was a scheme to try and stop the high number of accidents occurring due to ‘jaywalking’. There were lots of railings erected and red lines in the road similar to the red zones of late. I think it was highly unpopular as the good folk of Harringay didn’t like being corralled in this way!

Comment by Richard Woods on August 31, 2019 at 15:34: I was a young reporter for the Hornsey Journal when the Pelican Crossing scheme was opened by Transport Minister Ernest Marples, the construction magnate who built many of the motorways after his chum Beeching, Road Haulage guru, shot down the railways. Odd that.

Comment by Renato B on September 7, 2019 at 20:21: Behind the two fellas is Coburn and Hughes which was a motorcycle shop which I often popped into. The dealership closed a few years later and moved to a corner shop in Seven Sisters Rd - Finsbury Park. (I am still biker with a 2014 Kawa z1000).

Comment by Derek Reynolds on June 12, 2020 at 6:44: Coburn & Hughes were on my regular itinerary of late evening window gazing. I remember they had 'Big Ed', a stainless and chrome Vincent in there for a while. That would be around 1964. Still biking.
