Albums: Historical Images of Alexandra Palace & Park
Date seems good Hugh as BBC moved in in 1935 I think. This is the Muswell Hill end of course so where the roller rink I used was sited later. Also in the picture there seem to be some lines (railway?) just beyond the lamp post - any ideas?
Yes, I think the railway lines are part of the line that used to run from Finsbury Park - what is now the Parkland Walk.
I went to the roller rink, too, Richard. Probably crashed into you at some stage.
Now there's a thought of course - it is inevitable that we should have crossed paths at some point. But my best/worst memory is falling over at speed on the wooden floor - ouch did it burn!
I believe that the tracks to be those of the tramway that ran up to the Palace (from 1905 until 1938) rather than those of the railway. The "lamp post" in the foreground looks like one of the supports for the overhead wires. At this point the tracks are leaving the road and curving round to the tram terminus just in front of the corner of the Palace. The relationship between the railway and the tramway can be seen in the aerial view here
Nice one Stephen - it also accounts for why the tracks look narrow gauge - they are! The aerial picture is amazing.
Thanks for the info Stephen - guess I jumped too hastily to conclusions!
