This shot was taken shortly before these houses were demolished to be replaced with the houses that stand there today.
They were part of a terrace named Park Villas. Built up by 1860, they were amongst the first of Crouch's End's urban development and preceded Abyssinia and the developments either side of Hornsey High Street by about a decade.

The new houses look a lot worse
The old buildings might have been a bit dull, but they were succeeded by truly characterless ones. It seems that from the middle of the 20th century it became acceptable to build without any aesthetic consideration or flair; facades could be flat and featureless. Was this just a matter of economics? It’s nice that we still have a fair bit of Victorian domestic architecture with pleasing brickwork in the area.
