Hi Everyone! Thanks for confirming my membership to the site. I have been reading your community posts about Northumberland House Mental Hospital and there are so many wonderful memories and stories here.
I am a Canterbury-based artist working on a live show about Vivienne Haigh-Wood Eliot and her final years at Northumberland House hospital (scheduled for October 2022 at Bruce Castle Museum).
I will be working with Bruce Castle Museum at its Local History Fair on May 14th 2022, where we hope to collect memories/stories/soundbites about Northumberland House and other hospitals in the borough. These soundbites will contribute to the Museum's permanent archive and will also be embedded into the live show.
I would love to hear from anyone who might want to chat about their memories of the hospital, either via email or Zoom. I can be contacted at: d.m.fitzgerald2008@outlook.com
Hugh very kindly granted me access to his photograph archive of Northumberland House in the early phases of this project. I have uploaded a reworked image, below.
Best wishes.
Hello Donna...........real sorry but I won't be able to arrange a meet up with you. I moved out of London back in 72. I hope this isn't a great disappointment but I wish you the very best with your show. Will there be some sort of "transcript" available ? Best wishes.......
Donna, real sorry but I have only just seen your request. (24/6 !?). Of course you can use whatever you wish. Wish you all the very best in your research and presentation.
Hope this works...

The Percy family's straight-tailed lion appears all over the place - our particular tail being the one-off deliberately offensive gesture looks really unlikely, but it's a lovely Harringay myth - sad to think it fairy tale.
Hi Donna. Can't contribute anything beyond remembering the lion and his tail - I now realise he was clearly visible from upper deck of the bus travelling west to Manor House - and you were just a pavement width away. Lived off Green Lanes 1942 - 1946. Pretty busy at the mo but will find time for fun/improbable Googling about the long straight tail and its being meant as a disrespectful gesture to someone in Town. regards, Nick
Hello Donna. It's a fascinating project. Though I would be pleased to contribute in any way I can, I have little to offer apart from fuzzy childhood memories of a big house behind closed gates.
A year or two ago there was a TV documentary on T S Eliot with much about Vivienne. I thought it was BBC4 but can't find it online. It might have been this one on Sky. Anyway, I am sure you will not have missed it.
All the best for your programme. Do keep HOL online updated and thanks for writing.
